Eighteen

I expect Malikai to be gone. He’s a monster. The leviathan, of all things. I don’t think biblical monsters hang around after sex, or to cuddle.

So when I open my eyes and my cheek is pillowed on one of his arms while the other is thrown over my shoulders, I can’t help but draw in a surprised breath, taking stock of my body and my surroundings.

Malikai has one knee pressed between my thighs, and if it were any higher, I might have to revisit just how turned on I am by him, even though I’ve only woken up. I take in another breath and gaze at the hand that’s curled on my pillow; the long claws are wicked and sharp, just as they had been last night. Or rather, earlier this morning. Is he still sporting his fangs as well?

The memory of him kissing me with a mouth that’s made for eating and ripping plays through my mind, and it’s not an unpleasant thought. I love his sharp edges, though I’m not going to tell him that.

Not until I get this raging affection under control. He’s the leviathan, after all. I doubt he wants to have a dead witch swooning over him for all of eternity.

Malikai sighs behind me, and his hand curls more tightly, nails pricking into my skin, before relaxing once more. He leans forward, until he presses his nose to my hair, and murmurs a soft, “Good morning, Rue,” against my ear.

I blink and consider moving. “How did you know I was awake?” I ask, my eyes still caught by that taloned-hand in front of my face.

He bends his arm, the muscles of his biceps swelling under my cheek, and brings that hand in to stroke one talon over the bridge of my nose and across my forehead lightly enough to almost tickle. It feels good, and I unexpectedly sigh and close my eyes once more at the feeling.

“You’re not as much of a riddle as I think you’d like to be. I’m sorry to say,” Malikai informs me, his other hand trailing claws down my shoulder. “How do you feel?”

“I feel fine.” The words are out of my mouth before I have time to really think about the question, but that wouldn’t change my answer anyway. I do feel fine, for the most part.

Though there’s something… strange inside me. A feeling I can’t explain, but feels a bit like somewhere in my magic there’s a leak and some of my power, and my energy, is very slowly draining out of me. I can only really sense it when I think about it, and it doesn’t hurt.

It’s just… very strange.

“No pain?” He pushes the blanket off of my body and runs his hand over my side where the scarecrow had tried to take me apart. His talons shrink, becoming human-like nails again. I can’t help but frown in disappointment.
