Eleven

Emily blinked into the tiny of slats of sunlight creeping through the closed blinds. Then she rolled over and glanced at Damien. He was still asleep, his hair waving haphazardly across his forehead. Although she was tempted to smooth it from his brow, she kept her hands to herself.

She gazed at his magnificently formed body. The sheet covered him from the waist down, but she knew what he looked like below the silky drape. She knew what it felt like to make love with him, too.

He opened his eyes, and they stared at each other. He leaned over to kiss her, and she realized that no matter how close they’d gotten last night, they were still strangers.

“I don’t even know your last name,” she said.

“It’s Black.”

Like the color of the lenses that masked his damaged eyes? That compelled her to ask, “Is it your real name?”

“No. After the demon was slain, all of us changed our names. We needed to start over.”

An uncomfortable feeling came over her. What if the demon had some sort of hold over the one who’d killed it? What if before it died, its spirit entered the boy’s body?

Damien kissed her again, and she fought a shiver.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I’m just a little cold.”

He brought the blanket up around them. “Better?”

Distracted by her troubled thoughts, she nodded absently. If a possession had taken place, then that would make the rumors true. Damien or one of his friends would qualify as being a demon.

“You still seem chilled,” he said.

“It’s just the morning air.” She flattened her palm against his chest. If he had a creature inside him, would she be able to feel it?

His heartbeat stirred softly beneath her touch, making the moment confusingly romantic. How could she be worried about a possession when he seemed so warm and gentle? She needed to stop letting her superstitions run away with her.

“Let’s make breakfast,” he said. “You can wear my robe if you’d like.”

They got out of bed and he went to the closet and brought back a lightweight robe that looked like a kimono of some sort.

He helped her put it on, and she said, “This is beautiful.”

“I got it downtown in Little Tokyo. But I’ve been to Japan. I’ve been just about everywhere.” He took a pair of boxer briefs out of his dresser, slipped them on, then climbed into a pair of holey jeans. “I like to immerse myself in the sexual culture of other countries.”

“I haven’t been out of the States. But I plan to travel when I can afford it. For the history and regular culture.” She watched him zip his jeans. “Not anything sexual.”

He roamed his gaze over her. “Being with me is going to change you.”

She was well aware of his erotic impact on her. After a few anxious breaths, she said, “I need to freshen up a bit before we start the meal.”

“Me, too. But you can go first if you want privacy.”

“Thank you.”

They took turns in the lone bathroom,
