The street is dark and quiet when we reach the apartment.

Amar holds the door for me while I get out of the car. I feel like the whole world is watching, even if no one is around us, and like my face is a cherry-red light, glowing beneath the street lamps.

I feel drawn to him like a magnet, craving the moment I can feel his hands on me again.

He shuts the door behind me and then turns. His gaze roams my face, something almost awestruck in his eyes. That tiny, secretive smile tugs at his mouth. He heads for the house.

I bite my lip and follow.

Our footsteps echo in the stairwell while we climb toward the third floor. “Your roommate going to be around tonight?” Amar whispers.

A thrill bubbles through me, so unlike what I expected to be feeling at this moment. “No.”

He casts a quick glance back. I can’t stop my grin at the hot, sensual promise in his eyes. When we reach the top of the steps, he takes my hand, and his thumb plays along the side of my fingers while he leads me down the hall.

Then it stops, and so does he.

My brow furrows. “Amar?”

I step closer to him and then follow his gaze.

My apartment door is ajar.

Amar starts down the hall, keeping me behind him. Every line of his body is tense. It feels like static electricity is building beneath his grip on my hand.

Cautiously, he nudges the door. It swings aside.

A breath stutters from me.

Books are scattered everywhere. The coffee table has been reduced to kindling. Chairs are overturned, and our posters have been ripped from the walls.

Amar grabs me when I try to shove by him. “Don’t.”

I can’t tear my eyes from the room.

“Stay here.” He pushes me back, watches me for a heartbeat as if to make sure I’ve heard him, and then inches past the door.

I trail him into the apartment anyway.

Our rooms are a wreck. I can see them through the open doorways. My bed has been sliced open, and Ruby’s too. Clothes are strewn everywhere.

“Ruby?” I call.

No answer.

“Ruby? Ruby!”

The cry bounces uselessly from the apartment walls.

“Cait.” Amar takes my shoulders as if to hold me steady. “She might not have been here. She said she was going to be out tonight.”

I tug my gaze in his direction only to freeze when it catches on her coat, tossed loosely amid the debris. I pull away from him and walk toward it.

There’s a folded bit of paper placed on top. And next to it, her wallet and keys. With trembling fingers, I pick up the note and pull the creases of it apart. My eyes track over the words scrawled in ballpoint on the paper scrap.

We warned you.

“She was,” I say, my whole body shaking. “They’ve taken Ruby.”
