Chapter 13: Brand

I had never subscribed to the idea that just because we were demons, that we were supposed to be evil and conniving all the time. I liked a good laugh with my friends. I liked making kids smile. I even loved calendars with pictures of kittens in baskets. Who didn’t?

Some of the demons at Grimway Academy, and in the underworld itself, were a little too wrapped up in their eternal plan to wreak havoc and destruction. Me? I just liked being a comfortable guy. It was true that I came from a family of demons, but we weren’t one of the stuck-up elite dynasties that mostly filled the student lists at Grimway Academy. We were more like...well, like some kind of boisterous family in a TV sitcom, always laughing and inviting people over for dinner. In our case, demons, but you get the picture.

Other demons told me all the time that the stuff on TV wasn’t really real, but I didn’t care. I loved it. Grimway was out of the way, being placed on an island, and on top of that, a magical, dimensional anomaly, but I still like paying extra for a little TV. I watched it when I worked out, which was pretty much all the time. You couldn’t get as buff as I was without a serious time commitment.

What I really liked best, though, besides kittens, was taking care of people. I was always the one in my family who could find a missing sock, or lend a supportive shoulder to a sister when she had her latest hellish breakup. And if anybody needed a fire lit, or a birthday candle sparked up? I was there. I just enjoyed helping.

And in my year at Grimway, I hadn’t met any woman that needed me in the way that Echo did.

I hadn’t been celibate; that would be silly. But a mating bond had never come my way. They were rare anyway, but somehow I’d worried that I wasn’t the kind of guy who could help in that way. I was strong, yes, and woman had said I had certain skills in the bedroom. But maybe I wasn’t evil enough.

Now, though, I had the chance to help the hottest woman ever to come to this school. I was going to get to offer assistance in the development of her talent

To put it bluntly, I was going to fuck her.

More than that, I had to.

This was kind of the best day I’d ever had.

I slid an arm around Echo, enjoying the smooth feel of her skin-tight black workout clothes. Her curves felt perfect under my hand. I pulled her hips to mine, knowing that she could feel my hard body through my own gym outfit. I sensed the heat building between us. Dang it, I couldn’t help it. I bent down and licked her neck.

Echo’s voice was a little shaky. “You said your name is Brand, right? It feels strange to have just met you and to be this close to you.
