21. SAMUEL

“If you hurt her I swear to God, I will hunt you down and murder you myself.” Samuel’s head flew up, and he looked at Ash with wide eyes. Wearing the towel Sara had given him last night, he wanted to take a look around the cellar to see if there was anything of significance he could scavenge. The look on Ash’s face was so fierce he swore she was a descendant of the Valkyries of old.

“Sara’s been through a lot, and she barely escaped the last psycho. She’s closer to me than a sister, and I almost lost her once.”

Samuel held his hands in the air in a placating gesture. “I have no intentions of hurting her. I never did.”

“You played some really shitty tricks on her. She’s told me the stories.” She crossed her arms and watched his face. He assumed she was looking for signs of dishonesty.

“That was before I knew her. Even then, I never tried to hurt her. Honestly, you should be proud of how brave she is. Nothing I threw at her scared her.” He rubbed his face with his hands, wondering if he would have to use his powers on Ash to charm her.

She eyed him for a long minute before turning around and going to the back door. Opening it, she let Chico in from outside and picked the dog up, cuddling him. “I guess you need clothes. Sara can take you to the mall when she wakes up.”

Ash put Chico on the ground and grabbed Sara’s car keys off the hall table. Before she left, she turned to him and gave him an unreadable look. “I’m watching.”

Samuel stood in the hallway, his mouth ajar at the whirlwind that just passed him by, then shook his head. It was far too early for this lunacy, and he hadn’t been free long enough to deal with it. But, Sara loved her friend, and she was officially on the Do Not Harm list, so it behooved him to put up with her.

Chico ran up to him and pawed at his leg. “Women are crazy,” he whispered to the little imp after he picked the dog up. Chico licked his face in what he considered to be agreement. “At least that hasn’t changed over the past few centuries.” He spent a few minutes nuzzling and petting the dog before placing him back on the floor.

Samuel went into the basement and opened the door to the cellar, moving rocks and dirt aside with his foot. He would need to take another shower after he finished his excursion to the depths of hell. Bathing daily seemed to be a thing in this time period,
