CHAPTER 25

Kayla

The nerve of that guy. Who does he think he is? Just because he’s a man and we’re supposed to be fated doesn’t mean I deserve to be treated like that. You’re not going to bully me. I’m not some girl who needs to be put in her place. No way. I’m Kayla Archer. You mess with me. You’re going to get hurt.

Man, the thrill I got from laying him out like that was awesome. The way he hit the ground. Incredible. I felt the vibration in my feet. He landed with a solid hit. And the look on his face was priceless. I hate that I was too pissed to really enjoy it.

Did he really think that by offering to spar, I’d give in? Men.

I need to hurry up and get the hell out of here. The longer I’m around him, the more rattled I get. The workout was a bust. He made sure of that. I’m even more off-balance than I was before. I can’t shake this weird anxious vibe.

The sensations don’t make sense. They’re new and completely unwelcome. My body is wanting things it never cared about before. Thoughts are popping into my mind that clearly do not belong in my life. And I don’t understand why my wolf is more worried about us leaving than she is about being here in the first place.

I hope Sage is ready to help me do my laundry. The sooner I’m out of here, the better.

Sage greets me as I walk in from outside. “Perfect timing. I just finished the kitchen. I’ll meet you downstairs as soon as my tea is ready.”

I nod as I walk to the basement door. “Sounds great. Thank you.”

We get the washing machine started and sit on the couch to wait for the cycle to end.

Sage covers her legs with a throw blanket as she drinks her tea. “I promised to tell you the story of how we all came to be here. Hopefully, it will answer all your questions. Are you ready?”

I settle into the sofa. “I’m all ears.”

Annalise and Willow join us as Sage starts at the beginning. Jack and Ashley, the prophecy, witches, threats, and a whole pack full of fated mates. The first natural-born alpha female, the high alpha, multiple alphas and betas, and mixed species packs.

It’s unbelievable. And too far-fetched to even comprehend. But there was truth in her words. No deception at all. Every single person in this house believes all of it to be real.

Annalise smiles at me. “I’ve never had a sister before. Being mated to brothers kind of makes us related, right?”

I stare at her as I replay her words in my mind. “What?”

I jump up, backing away from the couch. “No, no, no. I am not going to be mated to anyone. No offense, but you have this all wrong.”

Annalise looks at Sage before she looks back at me. “Oh, I’m sorry. I thought that you and Timothy were fated. Tanner told me who you were before you got here.
