A Decision Made with Faith

In the end, a full yielding—a full surrender—is a decision made with faith. And the very good news is that every person has been given a measure of faith. Every person can believe. There is an expectancy and a knowing that accompany believing. Faith becomes fully effective when we believe with great conviction that God will hear our heart’s cry and will respond out of the infinite love, goodness, and greatness of His own nature.

Some time ago, a man came to me for a LifePlan—a process I describe in greater detail later in this book. We had spent a full day together gaining a good understanding of his gifts and the ways in which God had molded him through life-changing experiences. We had discussed the need for surrender and he had acknowledged that he desired to surrender and had not yet surrendered his life to the Lord. On the second morning of our time together, he joined my wife and me for a time of prayer and reflection in the sunroom of our home. As we prayed, this young man voiced to God, “I want to surrender to You but I am afraid. Help me.”

We left the sunroom and moved to my office to begin the second stage of the LifePlan process, and I couldn’t help but notice a profound change in his face and demeanor. He suddenly was more relaxed, more vulnerable, more expressive, more radiant. I said, “You surrendered, didn’t you?”

He nodded. In merely admitting to the Lord that He wanted to surrender, he had given voice to his own faith that he could trust God in this matter. God accepted him where he was, and indeed had helped him to yield fully.

In the same way we come to Christ in faith initially, we move by faith into every stage leading to full surrender. While asking for God’s help, we must be willing to take an active step toward making Jesus the Lord of all we are and have. And though, at times, we may feel distant from God or we may struggle with various issues associated with our faith, we must believe with all our heart that we are becoming more and more like Christ, and are more and more surrendered as we take active steps toward yielding more of our lives to Him.
