TWENTY-THREE

Moses

When I hung up, I made up my mind that I was done with work for the morning. My concentration was gone. I was supposed to be working on some paperwork but I was feeling too fidgety and it wasn’t from the coffee. Speaking to my parents always did this to me. They made me feel inadequate, even though I considered myself a successful man. They, however, thought something had to be wrong with me because I hadn’t found a wife and settled down. They didn’t understand the drive and determination that I used to push myself through school and start my own practice.

Grabbing my jacket from behind the door, I put it on and left the office. I needed to feel the sunshine on my face and clear my head. I decided to take a walk down the block and get another cup of coffee. I know I didn’t need it, but any old excuse would’ve done right about then.

I couldn’t get mad at my folks for wanting me to settle down. At this point in my life, I was ready, but as luck would have it, the woman I fell in love with was married, and I’d been paid to keep close tabs on her and her family. I took a seat in the coffeehouse, hoping that the change of scenery would be good for me.

Almost immediately every female eye, black and white, turned to me. Although none of them came over to my table, I could see the change in their demeanor: Eyes batted, legs crossed, lips seductively licked. Each one tried to get me to notice them, but my heart was already being tugged between an assignment and love. Pulling out my phone, I dialed Verónica’s cell because I really needed to hear her voice.

The ladies who were trying to get my attention rolled their eyes at my blatant lack of interest. I wanted to snicker but that would only antagonize them. The phone rang four times before it went to voice mail, taking my heart with it. “Hey baby, I just wanted to hear your voice. Call me when you get a chance, okay.” I disconnected the call. I tried to sit there and finish my coffee, but I felt like a fish in a clear blue pond with the ladies still vying for my attention. Slowly, I got to my feet and headed for the door.

“You’re leaving so soon?” one brazen woman asked. She was a slender black woman with a short haircut and a cute smile.

“Yeah, got to get back to the office,” I lied.

“You work around here?” She reached for the door, held it open for me, then followed me out to the sidewalk.

“Not far from here,” I replied. I did not want to encourage the conversation so I started walking toward my office.

But the chick had balls. She wasn’t going to allow me to dismiss her like that.

“My name is Tammi.” She extended her hand and practically forced me to take it.
