From the stockyard to those with meat in their mouths, everyone involved has a responsibility to face the shadow and to weigh the considerations.
Animal FactoriesâOrganic farmers ostensibly have to accommodate animalsâ natural behaviors, but relevant USDA Organic standards have been weakened in recent years as a consequence of industry lobbying. By now we have animal factories with as many as 15,000 cows on what are called âorganic farms.â Big ag is pushing, in many cases distorting, organic standards to make this possible. Now that transnational corporations have invested in organics, they angle to use that label for marketing purposes with as little encumbrance as possible, in terms of their bottom line.
One of the most glaring examples of paradoxical contrast between economic and ecological outcomes is the CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) system for meat production.
