CHAPTER NINE

ON THE FIFTH DAY OF BEARMAS, A LION GAVE ME TO ME — THE FEMALE VERSION OF BLUE BALLS. SOMEONE HAND ME A JAR OF HONEY “O.”

Felix appeared almost cross-eyed and didn’t move. Poor delicate prince. Probably frozen. So she gestured again. “Come. Warm yourself.”

He took a hesitant step then another, snaring the sweater hung over her chair in passing, which he handed to her. Odd he wanted her to cover up given she’d noticed his smoldering gaze and the erection he couldn’t hide in those loose sleep pants.

The man wanted her, and he better watch himself or he’d find himself bearmauled since she felt the same way. Something about Felix, despite their major differences, appealed. Obviously a sign she needed to start dating again. But a better caliber than the Barrys of this world.

In her defense, she’d hoped by dating a human she’d not run into the misogyny often present in the shifter world. Bears being especially bad—her dad and Grandpa being the exception mostly because Grandma would have skinned them herself.

However, the same couldn’t be said about other male ursines. Every single time she’d gone to a bear picnic—which actually was a thing involving many hibachis and coolers on wheels—she’d been subjected to round-bellied men who thought she should fetch them snacks and drinks or scratch their backs. Needless to say, those men died of starvation and thirst, plagued by an itch.

In other words, she’d have died first before she served them.

Barry hadn’t made demands of her, although he did forget his wallet often when they went out. Still, he served as a means to an end, that end being an orgasm with another person. Despite his sturdy size, she’d had to be gentle lest she break him. It put a damper on her ardor at the time. Passion shouldn’t require limits.

Could Felix handle her if she let loose in the bedroom? The man originally came off as a pampered buffoon’ however, having seen him in action in the barn, she had to wonder how much of that might be an act. Her prince might have more depth than she’d given him credit for. If so, why pretend?

He did his best to ignore her as he warmed his hands over the stove.

As if. It wasn’t just lionesses who could be forthright. “What do you do for a living other than kiss babies and shake hands?”

He snorted. “As if I’d subject myself to those kinds of microbes.”

“I’m sure you carry around antibacterial spray for those occasions.”

The corners of his lips lifted. “Can’t be too careful. And in reply, I work for the family company. Charlemagne, Inc. We dabble in a few things but are most well-known for our perfumes.”

“What’s your job? Salesman?”

“Custom perfume designer.”

That made her laugh. “Seriously?”

“Very. And before you mock, I will add that it’s not a simple task creating fragrances that will mesh with people’s scents. Everyone is unique and a well-balanced perfume requires careful chemical composition to achieve the proper result.”

She angled her head. “I actually don’t disagree.
