ELLA

“Cal!” Ella called when she jogged into the office the next morning. “I’ve got news.”

“She yelled,” Cal said, standing up from behind his desk, “as she ran through a newsroom.”

“Oh, good morning Sass Fairy,” Ella muttered. “I didn’t see you there. I was looking for Cal.”

He grinned and nodded toward the hallway. “Coffee?” She hadn’t had any that morning but the excitement of possibly getting to talk to Clarence had been an effective stand in. Still, in case someone else came in while she was telling Cal her plan, talking in the break room would be better than doing it in the open. She wasn’t sure why exactly, but for now, she wanted to keep the discussion about Clarence between her and Cal. As far as she could tell, only she and Cal were still bothered by his sudden departure. Everyone else was either too distracted by the holidays to worry about it or had just accepted that Clarence had been fed up.

“Ok, what’s your news?” Cal asked, picking up Ella’s star mug and moving over to the coffee pot.

She closed the break room door and turned in time to see Cal raise an eyebrow at her. She did her best to ignore the heat she felt in her face from the way he was studying her. She cleared her throat and tried to focus. “I have an idea about how we might be able to see Clarence.” She told him about her conversation with Bill the night before.

“Whoa,” Cal said, handing her mug over. “But Bill didn’t know who the kid was that did the deliveries?”

Ella shook her head. “No, unfortunately. So, we’ll have to ask one of the Bumbles.”

“And we’ll have to do it in a way that won’t raise suspicion,” Cal said. “Otherwise, people might start camping out on his lawn.”

“And waiting for him to stick his head out and see his shadow,” Ella said with a nod.

Cal took a long drink and then set his mug down on the counter. “Let me get my coat.”

“Oh, you want to come with me?” Ella asked.

Cal looked at her. “Is that ok?”

She shrugged. “Sure.”

“Alright,” Cal said. “Let’s go.” He headed out of the room and Ella blinked at his retreating back.

“Oh, ok.”

The town was waking up as she and Cal left the newspaper office and walked quickly towards the market. The first wave of tourists were already meandering their way into the town square from the footpath leading up from the port. Ella picked up her speed as Helga reminded her how many assignments they had to cover for the day. They needed to make this quick. Beside her, Cal seemed to notice and picked up his speed to match.

“What’s up?” Cal asked.

“I was just thinking about the thirty-something stories we have to cover today,” Ella said.

“Crap. Yeah, we better make this quick.”

Ella nodded and led the way inside the small grocery store. There were only a few elderly shoppers, all of whom Ella knew by sight. They waved to her as she scanned the aisles, looking for Mr.
