The thing with attempting a high-speed chase through Surfside Beach and into Garden City was the multitude of stoplights. On an ordinary day, a person could spend tens of minutes sitting at one of the eleven stoplights in the seven miles between 544 in Surfside and the split of 17 into the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk.

This was no ordinary day. The odds were with Brian. We zoomed through the green light at Platt Boulevard and again at 5th Avenue North in Surfside Beach. He got over into the left lane as he sped through the light splitting Surfside Drive and Glenns Bay Road. I had to wait for a Range Rover to inch by before I could join him there. Only one vehicle separated us. I clutched the steering wheel in a vice-like grip. Blood roared through my ears.

I don’t know if I blinked for the first two miles. My focus was on his van and side-view mirror to see if he was looking back at me. We made eye contact once or twice, but I wasn’t sure if he knew who I was. Not a single cop car was in sight.

The man drove like a maniac. He changed lanes five or six times, weaving in and out, as we sped past Tupelo Bay. We were in the right lane as we clipped by Greg’s Cabana. Brian saw an opening in the left lane and swerved into it. The entire camper van wobbled on unsteady wheels with the sudden move. A sudden move like that in my Jeep could cause it to flip over. It surprised me that his RV didn’t.

I looked in my side-view mirror. A line of cars with no break was coming up on my left. There was no getting over behind Brian. I stepped on the gas and caught up with him. We raced alongside each other. I blew my horn. He jerked his head to look over at me for an instant before returning his attention to the road.

Then, his vehicle veered away from me. He merged into the turn lane, going to Atlantic Avenue. I had no choice but to keep going.

Several of the cars that had blocked my access to the left lane followed Brian into the turn lane. I couldn’t get over in time and passed through the intersection.

I looked back to see Brian swing left onto Atlantic and swing around a golf cart headed toward the beach and away from me.

Two thick rows of idling vehicles were at the light to go in the opposite direction. I merged left into the center lane in front of McDonald’s. Good fortune was with me again as two drivers stopped to give me room to turn into the fast-food parking lot. They presumably thought I was on a Big Mac run. They would be wrong.

I zoomed around the line of cars waiting at the drive-thru and exited the rear of that area that emptied out into Kroger’s parking lot. A narrow road flowed behind the Tsunami Surf Shop and Wings Beachwear shopping center.
