Chapter Nine

When people tell you not to have wishful thinking, I’m imaging that they somehow concocted this scenario in their head about me being in the Underworld schlepping after the King of the Damned.

Fun surprise: I now know how Lucifer’s office became so clean. Apparently, I’m not the only new demon to take his notice, he has a little maid. She’s tiny with dark hair and elfin features.

And she hates me which I’ve yet to figure out why.

She cowers anytime Lucifer comes into his office to grab something, but smiles softly at him when his back is turned. He completely ignores her in favor of barking orders at me on how he prefers to file his paperwork a certain way and how I’m not doing it right.

Somehow being berated by him has made me an enemy that I didn’t even know was possible to have. My eyes flicker over towards the shadows on the wall and I can practically feel their amusement in the air at the situation.

She’s been cleaning the same spot for twenty minutes. I only know that because I found Lucifer’s tablet underneath a pile of papers and downloaded a game on it out of boredom which means I can see the time clear as day slowly trickle by.

“Aren’t you supposed to be cleaning?” the elf finally asks.

I don’t bother looking up from my game of Solitaire to answer her. “I’m taking a break.”

“Lucifer won’t like that.”

Yeah, well I had a few choice words on where I think Lucifer can stick it. I find another Ace and begin piling on cards on top of it until I’ve run out of cards and need to press the deck for a new card. I’m hoping for a black spade but no dice.

“You’re going to get in trouble,” she huffs.

“I doubt it.” Mostly because I seem to be in a constant state of trouble. It’s not like anything else can be done. It’s been two days since I saw Abrax and Ackerly and since Lucifer came up with this brilliant plan to make me clean up his messes.

“Why are you even here?” she presses. “Are you hoping to get his attention because he won’t find you attractive.”

That gets on my nerves. I may want to ogle Lucifer but I know better than to assume that I’m on his radar. He’s the fucking Devil, I don’t think he really gives a shit about finding anyone attractive. At least I don’t think so.

“He’s going to be really pissed you’re touching his personal items.”

“I doubt it.”

“Doubt what?” a deep voice asks.

I glance up to see Lucifer walk back into the room once again and narrow his eyes at me. “Did you forget something again?” I ask sweetly. “Since this is the third time you’ve shown up in thirty minutes.”

“I wasn’t aware I needed to keep you up to date on my duties,” he grunts before swiping another stack of papers off the table near the door. “Aren’t you supposed to be organizing?”

I blow out a breath of air and sit his tablet down at his desk.
