Tru was nervous. Not just about Pandora coming over and meeting such a powerful witch, who also happened to be a neighbor, but also about what Pandora might tell her.

Because the truth was, Tru had come to understand that she desperately wanted to be an oracle. She’d realized it watching her aunts working with Eamon. She’d grown up believing it was her destiny, and the thought of not becoming one left her feeling like there was an emptiness inside her.

She didn’t want to go the rest of her life wondering what could have happened if she’d become one. She didn’t want her powers to be the death of her, either. But if Pandora could give her some kind of protection against that, Tru would be eternally grateful. Also, if Pandora was able to figure out whether or not Fatima’s prediction still stood, that would be nice, too.

Anything she could do to help Eamon would be equally appreciated.

Tru finished running the push-sweeper, which did a surprisingly good job of cleaning the floors and rugs. Apparently, her aunts preferred it to the vacuum, since the cats thought the vacuum was the devil.

Aunt Delly was dusting and wiping down surfaces while Aunt Cleo was straightening things and returning the multitude of cat toys to their various storage bins.

Tru looked around. “I think we’re in good shape.”

“I hope so,” Aunt Delly said. “Pandora’s due to arrive in ten minutes. There’s no time to repaint.” She laughed at her own words, making Tru smile.

Tru took comfort in the fact that Aunt Delly wasn’t nervous. Or if she was, she wasn’t letting it affect her. Tru tried to be that way, too. “No time to adopt out any of these cats, either. I hope she’s not allergic.”

“She’s not,” Aunt Cleo said. “She has a cat of her own.”

“Oh, that’s right. I remember one of you mentioning that.”

Someone knocked on the front door.

Aunt Delly headed for it. “I’ll get it.”

Which immediately told Tru it was probably Seamus and Eamon, arriving early for the meeting. A moment later, when a smiling Aunt Delly returned with the two men, Tru was proven right.

Seamus was in a dark suit and tie. “I have to leave from here and go straight to the funeral home,” he explained.

“You look very nice,” Tru said.

Eamon greeted her with a nod but no smile. Maybe he felt like she did. Like something was coming and it might not be good.

While Seamus walked toward the living room with Aunt Delly, Tru stood with Eamon in the hall outside the dining room and just beyond the foyer. “You seem nervous.”

He sighed. “It’s the not knowing. Are you not nervous?”

“No, I am. For sure. I just hope that whatever she tells us, there’s a solution. It’s one thing to get bad news; it’s another thing not to be able to do anything about it.”

“Aye.” He managed a quick smile. “More than anything, I hope you’re able to become an oracle.”

“You do?”

“Don’t you?”

She nodded. “Yes. But I guess I didn’t think you’d thought about it.
