Forty-Eight

VIVIEN

Grim’s eyes first widened, then his brows dipped as if he were in pain. I thought he’d been about to kiss me, but now he sneered.

Then I smelled it. The ambrosia that was his blood hit the air like a shot. I stepped back to find the handle of a knife sticking out of Grim’s side.

Grim took a deep breath, sliding his hand around the hilt and then pulling it out of his gut with a jerk. Whoever had done it, must have walked right by us. I searched my memory and recalled the scent right before someone stuck Grim. Money, lime, and steel.

Looking around, I traced the scent to a man. Bald, under six feet, wearing sunglasses and a suit. Then I noticed there were six more like him that stuck out like a bunch of sore thumbs.

Well, that was a bit cliché. Maybe wearing a sign that said in big red letters, I’m an antagonistic thug, was too showy for them.

“We need to get everyone out of here before—” Grim started.

The thugs pulled out guns in tandem. Ratatattat. They went off in explosive pops.

The crowd burst into screaming hysteria. People dodged out of the way, trampling each other, some of them falling. Grim jerked under the onslaught of bullets. He threw out his arms, his supernatural force sending the people closest to him flying out of range of the gunfire.

Time slowed around me, as I reached down and touched my stomach. My fingers came away bloody.

The fuckers shot me. They actually shot me.

I turned to share my disbelief with Grim, when the guns went off again, rapid-fire. Sizzling hot steel tore through my flesh, sending pain screaming through my body.

Oh wait, I was screaming. It didn’t matter that I didn’t need to breathe, I gasped, wanting the pain to stop.

The cascade of bullets finally ceased as our attackers reloaded. When had I fallen on my knees? My blood-soaked hands were shaking.

That’s when I saw Grim. He lay prone on the floor, curled in on himself. Blood streamed out of him, pooling onto the lit fuchsia square of the dance floor.

Fear and anger crashed over the initial shock and pain as adrenaline hit me like a shot. They’d awoken something primal. Pure vampiric wrath pulsated through me.

I blurred over to one gunman, pushing his gun up before tearing out his jugular in a vicious feral move. Bullets tapped my back. Someone had reloaded.

Twisting around, I hissed at him in pure animal fury. In the blink of an eye, I snapped the neck of a second gunman.

The club had all but emptied, leaving five gunmen standing. A faint green glow surrounded them. They were human, but they seemed charged by some supernatural power. The rain of gunfire kept me at bay, but soon they’d need to reload and then I’d rip them to pieces.

One gunman dropped his gun, mouth going slack, eyes wide in terror. I followed his stare.

A nightmare come to life, Grim hovered inches above the floor. His eyes turned to black sucking darkness, as inky veins stuck out along his face.
