Having a reasoned, mature and sensible discussion about the US trip with Raemond Charles, the NAS Scotland PR guy

Not only that, US customs had the absolute authority to refuse entry. So, although it wasn’t a life-or-death situation, I had to pass ESTA, falsely enter the US as a tourist and cope with customs.

I’d quipped I was a blunt instrument with a licence to kill from the NAS. Now I would technically have to enter the US undercover. Once on foreign ground, potential interviewers could contact me via my cell phone and if they did, well, it would be most impolite for me not to reply...

Cloak and dagger? Not really. More a way of coping with badly designed bureaucracy, and although it was quite fun to play James Bond, it should also have been quite unnecessary.

Although this nonsense might have fazed some Autists, I was quite sanguine about it. I had navigated US customs 21 years before: it had been the most polite grilling I’d ever had, and with my then-unknown Asperger focus fully in command, I’d sailed through.

This time, knowing that a characteristic of autism is the masked and unreadable face, I would use that very face to avoid giving anything away.

It was also decided not to inform Miss Landau of the undercover aspects of the operation until I was, as I put it, “wheels up and in the air.” I reluctantly agreed with the decision. I trusted her, but the post 9/11 world seemed to be profoundly paranoid, and if one chance remark reached US Homeland Security, my trip might be over before it began.

It’s worth repeating that, in some ways, the autistic mindset is better-suited to travel because it enables a person more clearly to comprehend the facts as they are and not (like some neuro-typicals do) as they wish them to be.

So I clearly got the message that:

No ESTA, no departure.

Fail at customs, no arrival.
