DeeDee,

To rib your father, ask him about his black patent leather tap shoes. Back when, searching for something else entirely (croquet mallet? tennis ball?), I chanced upon those “dancers” beneath a mound of fraying sneakers in the hallway closet. (Spiders found them first.) This much I pried out of your grandmother: when two of the girl cousins signed up for lessons, your grandmother, not wishing your father, age six, to miss out on “enrichment,” signed him up also. Whatever happened at those sessions—and your father remains mum—I’m inclined to blame the experience for his subsequent lack of dance enthusiasm. Perhaps you’ll be able to get to the bottom of the mystery. If so, share?
