DEAR LITTLE SIS,
Wait, I realize you donât know me, so maybe I am being a little too forward by calling you âsis.â You see, I am the oldest of three kids and the only girl. I always dreamed of writing to you. I have waited decades to drop you some gems about life, the future of work, and what that means for people who look like us. I have been waiting for just the right opportunity to tell you all the things I wish someone had told me. Often, I wonder if I had received a letter like the one youâre reading, maybe I would have been more prepared for the âreal world.â Maybe I would have known and believed that brown-skinned girls really do have skin like pearls like Beyonce said. Let this letter always be a reminder on the days when you start to question your worth, that you are the prize in every room you walk into. They notice you! Matter of factâYOU ARE THE ROOM!
When I was your age, I didnât realize how much power I possessed. I used to think I needed to shrink walking into boardrooms where I found myself as the âonlyâ oneâthe only Black woman and sometimes the only Black person, full stop. And along the way, I picked up the bad habit of modifying and erasing my authentic self, in order to mirror what I thought the majority wanted from me. Like changing my name to something âeasierâ or more âpalatable.â Or wearing my hair in a certain style that didnât reflect the real me. Today, I finally get the chance to tell you that your work, career, hobbies, and loveâall of it matters. There is a unique slice of brilliance that only you bring to every project and workplace. May you find power in the words that roll off your tongue when you advocate for yourself. May you find strength in the moments when you ask for more! And when youâre feeling like running towards your fears, lean into your courage; because you will always be your best advocate.
Oh, and never be afraid to say no, to the people, places, and things that no longer serve you, so that you can make room for all of the times you want to say âYes!â Life is so much sweeter when you say yes to the people, places, and things that bring you joy. You have the power to choose the authentic version of you, be it she, they, or them. This letter is for you, the little sister that I always wanted. As your big sis, I am here to let you know there are tables with a seat waiting for you with your name on it. Or you might decide to create your own table so that you can add seats for women like us. The sooner you learn that you will always need a squad of others, the better off you will beâbecause success is not a solo sport.
