Jace dared not react to Portia’s cries. His attention was solely on the innumerable vampire aggressors he could no longer fend off. Many swords had successfully sliced his body and he was bleeding. His energy was slowing waning as he continued to bleed out. He was not sure how much longer he would last.

Wind howled behind him, but he did not have the luxury to turn and see what was happening. Every ounce of his remaining strength and attention was required to hold off the attacking horde. He could not check on Portia or his friends. From the echoing sound of metal, he knew fighting continued.

A body to his right flew out of sight. That grabbed his attention and he turned to see a funnel cloud pull three more vampires away from him and tear them apart. Tornados were rare in the Nightshade universe, and he knew this was not a natural occurrence; it was Portia’s doing.

Another blood curdling scream escaped his soul mate and he turned to see a massive funnel cloud move toward him. A sword sliced through his shoulder, bringing him to his knees. His eyes were focused on Portia. Her hair whipped around her in the middle of the swirling, vengeful, tempest his furious mate controlled.

He knew the vampires behind him were ready for the kill and he had no more strength to save himself. His last thought would be of Portia as he watched her element protect her. It was a beautiful sight.

A streak of black flew from the funnel cloud and he tracked it in awe. Portia’s panther was alive and took down the three vampires who threatened him with her momentum. She ferociously snapped her powerful jaws around the closest one’s neck. With a growl and a wrench, she severed the vampire’s head from his body. Portia made quick work of the other two.

The remnants of the funnel cloud caught the few remaining vampires who did not retreat. Before he knew it, the only beings in the clearing were his blood brothers and their soul mates. Somewhere along the line, Drake had joined the fight. Jace had not even noticed his arrival.

Releasing the last of the vampire’s bodies from her jaw, Portia’s cat gracefully stalked toward Jace. She rubbed against his upper body, rumbling her love for him.

Portia licked his wounds and he quickly healed. He reached his hand toward her head and pet her between the ears. Jace tugged on each ear, something the cat always loved.

“Will she be able to change back?” Emma asked. “I will never forget seeing Portia jump out of that funnel cloud. It was epic!”

“Are they coming back?” Jace asked Miranda. She had become their vampire barometer.

Miranda closed her eyes, her palms facing the ground. “They are below ground now. Those who survived will relate what they saw tonight.”

“I doubt they will be back this evening,” Frazour looked at each of his brothers and their mates. “Is everyone all right?”

“We are banged up,” Sammuel groaned. “The women are fine and Jace lost a lot of blood.
