Chapter Eleven

Cassie stared out her bedroom window. The sun was pale and anemic, but it was still relatively high in the sky. She had plenty of time to get to the barn and back before it got dark.

She went over the contents of her oversized bag, making sure she had everything she would need. Taser, machete, blowtorch with a fully reloaded fuel supply…

Gideon’s invention was the key to this whole thing. She was sure of it. It was what brought him back to life; maybe why he was killed in the first place. After all, who could pass up the opportunity to control the Cataclysm?

The way it stood now, transformations were unpredictable. Sure, magic searched out a person’s inner beliefs, but how many people actively chose what they believed in? Most just went along with what they had learned as children, following more from habit than true conviction. Besides, just because you believed in something didn’t mean you wanted to become it.

Cassie believed in bad-hair days. That didn’t mean she wanted to have a perpetual one.

Being able to choose what you became meant you could literally become anything you wanted to be. It had the potential to truly reshape the world.

And like all earth-shattering ideas, if the wrong person got hold of it, all hell would break loose.

Cassie had to find Gideon and his project and make sure that didn’t happen.

She had a pretty good idea where it was. Strange noises, odd lights, and a strong chemical odor - all classic signs of paranormal activity. What better way to cover up a secret lab than to put it in a place already known for bizarre occurrences?

The barn was the logical place to look, so that’s where she would head.

There was a loud knock on the door. She opened it to find David, looking heart-wrenchingly attractive in dark blue jeans and a heavy wool sweater. He barged into the room without waiting for her to invite him. “I want to talk to you.”

“I don’t think there’s anything we need to say.” Cassie tried to ignore the way her skin felt like it had come into contact with a live wire as he brushed by her. “Unless you’ve come to confess something…”

Barely looking at her, he started talking, spitting the words out at a break-neck pace. “I’ve been thinking about what happened at the cottage." Tugging at the ring on his right hand, he worked it restlessly with his fingers. “I’ve thought about it a lot, and I realized there were a few things I needed to explain…”

He trailed off as he noticed the bag on the floor. His gaze dropped to the belt around her waist, loaded with her hunting knives. “Are you going somewhere?”

“I’d rather not say. You have your secrets, I have mine.”

His expression clouded over. “I thought we went over this before. It’s not safe for you to go out by yourself.” A muscle in his jaw tightened in an angry tic. “I’ll take you wherever you need to go.
