Thirty people never sounds like much, until you try cramming them into a single house. The poor living room was bursting at the seams, and the kitchen had grown so cramped, it was hard to breathe. The backyard fared a little better. At least people weren’t sitting in each other’s laps. The hard part was going to be figuring how to speak to everyone at once.

Thankfully, someone far more skilled in technology than me stepped up to help. Apparently, it was common in medium to larger sized packs for the alpha to be “miked,” while everyone else wore earpieces. Kept nosy neighbors from overhearing talk that centered around werewolves. Clearly, I still had a lot to learn. But for now, the pack had the required technology to make this meeting possible.

I stood at the head of the living room and eyed the people surrounding me. The more dominant members had claimed the closest spots, while the lower-ranked members hovered in the kitchen, and the human-borns stood in the backyard. Some sort of hierarchy I knew nothing about. But I left them to it. That wasn’t a fight I wanted to take on today. Not when Laini’s family sat on the nearest couch to me, their despair so palpable, I could taste it.

To my left stood Cole, and to my right Sam. After we’d cleaned me up, I’d asked him to attend the meeting. I didn’t care what Cole said or what the pack thought, Sam was my mate. And even more so, he had personal knowledge of Corbin. He was an asset, regardless of their discomfort with him.

“Very well, let’s get started,” I said, calling the meeting to order. I took another gander at the room, trying to recall as many names as possible. Sadly, I knew less than a third. Cole had been right when he’d called me an outsider. It was no wonder this pack wanted nothing to do with me.

I still hadn’t decided yet as to whether I would stay in Jackson or return home. Regardless, I had a role to play here, one that required me to learn more about these people. I couldn’t brush them aside as nameless faces anymore.

“As I’m sure everyone already knows, I’m Lucy Williams—Reginald Hayes’ biological daughter. But there may be some who don’t know that I was human-born.”

No one so much as batted an eyelash in the living room, but I heard a smattering of whispers from the kitchen. Guess some people hadn’t heard that tidbit of information about me.

“Reginald named me his heir before passing, which means after his death, I became your alpha.”

“We know this already,” someone growled.

My gaze shot in his direction, only to find a bearded, bushy-haired redhead. He stood next to the grandfather clock, his massive fists balanced on his broad hips. Give the man a kilt, and he would have reminded me of a Scottish Highland Games competitor.

Cole leaned in and whispered in my ear, “That’s Marcus.”

Ah. Well, damn. The man was built like a tree trunk.
