Chapter Nine

“Soulmates?” Paige repeated as if she didn’t know the meaning of the word.

“My bear knew it the moment I met you.”

“What the fu—” Emma and Grace came running towards them, “—fudge cakes,” she finished.

She got down from Ben’s arms.

“We’re having fudge cakes and chocolate mousse?” Grace asked, her eyes wide with excitement. “Yummy, yummy, in my tummy.” She patted her belly.

“No, we’re not having fudge cakes, Grace.”

She pouted. “Why did you say fudge cakes then?”

“Never you mind.” Paige glanced at Ben. Why would he say that? Polar bear shifters and elves couldn’t be soulmates. Friends, lovers, lifetime partners, sure, but bears only chose another bear to be their mate. It was impossible.

Strangely though, her stomach fluttered all the same.

“Is your ankle okay now, Mummy?” asked Emma.

“Yes, it’s fine.”

“Oh, goody, Ben can carry us now!”

Ben laughed. “Can I now?”

“Yes, carry us, carry us!” shouted Grace.

“I think there’s a little word you need to say first,” Ben told them.

“Please, please, pleeeeese,” chimed the girls.

“That’s three words, so I guess I can’t say no, can I?” He looked at Paige. “If it’s okay with your mum?”

Paige looked at the animated expressions on her girls’ faces and nodded. What Ben had said was merely a misunderstanding of some sort, it had to be.

The girls squealed in delight as Ben scooped them up and plonked Emma on one shoulder, Grace on the other, his broad shoulders making a perfect seat for their little bottoms. He held their legs so they didn’t fall. “Right, hold on tight, mini elves,” he said as he weaved along the path, ducking and diving, and making aeroplane noises.

Paige followed behind as the dogs ran in circles around Ben and her girls.

Emma and Grace’s giggles incited her own laughter, and out of nowhere, an idea popped into her head. She could see it all as clearly as if it was written in stone; Ben and her, soulmates, together forever. She imagined what it would be like to share her life with Ben, the girls, the dogs, more kids running around—sets of twins, of course—and then growing old together, perhaps having their grandchildren around for sleepovers.

The perfect life.

At least it was the storybook life she’d dreamed of as a child, and as an adult too, but in reality, things never worked out that way.

And anyway, she hardly knew Ben. Regardless of his, ‘You’re my mate, Paige,’ absurd confession, she wasn’t about to lose her head over a guy she’d just met. A kind, sexy guy who evoked a crazy, buzzy sensation within that she couldn’t explain, but still, finding someone special and knowing they were ‘the one’ didn’t happen in real life.

At least not instantly. Those things took time.

Unless they actually were soulmates, and the weird sensation coursing through her veins was trying to tell her something…

“Are you coming in, or are you going to stand in the cold all day?” Ben asked, interrupting her wayward thoughts.

Paige blinked several times and took in her surroundings. She must have been walking on autopilot—she hadn’t even been aware they’d reached Ben’s house.
