Chapter Nine

“How?” Tyler asked, trying to focus on something other than her lips.

Because after he’d shifted back, albeit in the most unfortunate and embarrassing way, he’d wanted to take her in his arms and kiss her until she gasped for air.

The sheer thrill of becoming a wolf had blown his mind. The exhilaration of racing through the woods without a care in the world had instilled him with a strength that took his breath away, but it had also touched on something deep within his soul, something he wasn’t ready to face yet.

He wasn’t stupid, he knew what Kelsey was doing. In fact, he did seem to be more astute since he’d gone wolf, more aware of everything around him, including, dare he think it, the way Kelsey’s mind worked. He’d certainly never understood the workings of a woman’s mind before, but with Kelsey it was different. It was as though he ‘got’ her.

He knew why she’d taught him how to shift without fear, shown him the ‘gift’ he’d been given, as she called it. Although he wasn’t sure if she’d actually planned to bring him to meet her sister and Ryan—Kelsey had howled and Alyssa appeared shortly after—he knew what she was doing.

Kelsey wanted him to accept his werewolf side, embrace it, and maybe becoming his wolf hadn’t been as terrifying or as awful as he’d thought. Maybe he could learn to live as a werewolf… He stopped the thought before it could form.

None of it mattered now. He had bigger problems. Namely, Savannah.

If there was even the slightest chance she would start a pack war… it didn’t bear thinking about. Granted, he still knew little about werewolves, their politics, their beliefs, the hierarchy Kelsey had touched upon, but if he could prevent a possible supernatural war, then he would do everything in his power to do so.

The only way to do that was to find a cure.

“Come to work with me at the bookshop, Tyler,” Kelsey said, interrupting his thoughts. “If there’s anyone who knows about a cure, then it’s my boss, Jim. And if he doesn’t know, we’ll search the bookshop until we find one.”

He frowned. “Sorry, I know you’re only trying to help, but I don’t think a bookshop can help with a supernatural problem.”

“Jim’s shop is rather unique,” she said with a grin. “The books and grimoires Jim has collected over the centuries cater to supernaturals.”

His jaw dropped. “Centuries? How old is he?”

“Jim’s ancient, bless him, a gargoyle, but don’t let that put you off. If you don’t mind me telling him you were bitten, he’ll want to help.”

First Kelsey, then her sister, and now a gargoyle of all people, all of whom wanted to help him? Oh, and Kelsey’s alpha too; she’d said he would help him as well. So far, supernatural beings seemed like a friendly lot.

Would it be so bad to embrace this new world? To accept what I am…?

No, he wouldn’t allow himself to think it. He had to remember Savannah and her pack of wolves.
