I leaned into Damien, taking in the sights and sounds of the fair. I couldn't believe I'd never been to one before, or that he'd realised that this was the kind of date I liked. Not that I'd been on many of them.

"What do we do first?" I asked.

"That depends. Are you hungry?"

"Not really, I don't think."

"Okay, then food can wait. But when you're ready, we can go find the food trucks," he said.

"Let's guess? Hot dogs, burgers, fresh doughnuts?"

"Yes to all of those. Do you have a preference?"

"All of them," I joked. "Well, maybe not them all. But you know what I mean."

"I do," he responded. "So if you're not hungry, we want a game. What do you think? Hook-A-Duck?"

"Sure?"

He put a hand on the small of my back and I leaned into his touch as he steered me over to a circular stall covered in prizes. A circular pond sat in the middle filled with bright yellow ducks.

"Prize every time!" the store holder called out. "Come Hook-A-Duck!"

Damien caught his attention and handed over some money, getting a hook in the process.

"All right, now what?" I asked once the man was gone.

"You hook a duck."

"Is it really as simple as that?"

He chuckled. "Yes."

"Okay..." I made sure I had enough room and stuck out the pole in front of me. My hands wobbled as I tried to catch one of the ducks with the small metal hook on the end. "Argh, I'm no good at this."

"Here," Damien said, stepping closer and putting his arms around me. His warm chest was inviting, and I was somewhat overwhelmed by the smell of him. It was almost enough to distract me from what I was supposed to be doing.

His hands landed on mine and guided the pole into the right position until he managed to make it so that I actually caught one of the ducks.

"Yes!" I pulled it back to me and set it down on the counter of the stand. "Now what?"

"You pick a prize," he said, gesturing to the stall.

"Hmmm, that's tricky. I mean this is your win, technically, don't you get to pick?"

The smile on his face made my heart skip a beat. "You pick."

"I think it's got to be the rubber duck there." I pointed to it.

He laughed. "Really?"

"Of course. That way it's a nice reminder of the date," I said.

Damien turned to catch the attention of the stall holder, but not because I caught sight of the satisfied smile on his face. They exchanged a few words and he presented me with a small rubber duck.

"Thank you." I beamed and slipped it into my bag. "He's going to have pride of place on my bathtub."

Damien's amusement was easy to read. "You're full of surprises."

"Because I'd put a rubber duck on my bathtub?"

"Among other things," he responded.

"What's the next game?" I asked, looking around. "One that's maybe a little less prize-y."

"You're guaranteed to lose the ring toss," he said, gesturing to the stall a few down.

"Then the ring toss it is.
