Chapter Eight

For the life of her, Eden couldn’t pipe the toffee sauce over the pecan swirl, at least not to her satisfaction. Sometimes, she did a neat zigzag, or the initials E.D., for Eden’s Delights, or a heart shape on Valentine’s Day, but nothing had gone right today.

Eden stared into space. She supposed she should be thankful she’d managed to get Charlie to school on time with the day she’d had. First, there was the leak in the bathroom, then, after nipping her son to school, she’d had to shoot back home to wait for the plumber. After he’d fixed the problem and she’d finally made it into work, she’d misread an order and sent six dozen cupcakes instead of six individual cakes. She’d had to let the customer have all of them since the fault was her end, which meant profits would be down.

After what happened with Maddox and the state he’d left her in—her hamstrings were killing her thanks to getting into positions she hadn’t done for so long—she was surprised she could even think straight, let alone walk straight. He’d kept his promise there, she’d give him that.

She dismissed the thought—she had more important things to think about, because every time she’d looked at her son that morning, his pale-grey eyes reminded her of the demon, but that wasn’t Charlie’s fault, the poor lamb.

Okay, technically I left Maddox, but what did he expect?

“Earth to Eden,” Amara said.

Eden blinked. Her mum stood in front of her waving a palette knife covered in frosting.

“Sorry, zoned out for a second.” She scrutinised the pecan swirls. “Oh no, we can’t sell these. Look at the state of them.” More profits down the drain.

“Yes, I know someone else who’s in a bit of a state too.” Amara smiled softly. “Do you feel ready to tell me what happened between you and Maddox yet? I didn’t want to pry, but you’ve been distracted all day.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. It might help if you talk about it. I won’t judge, I promise.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I’m not stupid, Eden. I know you’re an adult—usually a very capable one—and it’s none of my business, but—”

“Get on with it, Mum.”

“As I was saying, it’s none of my business, but I heard you come in very early this morning, so I’m assuming you slept with him?”

She glanced around the shop; no one appeared to have heard, thankfully. “Mum!”

Mum flicked her wrist as though she’d said nothing wrong. “Well, did you sleep with Maddox or not?”

Eden glared, then aimed the toffee-filled piping bag at Amara like a weapon. A customer looked over and chuckled. Maybe he had overheard her mum’s inappropriate conversation after all.

“More to the point, did you tell him about Charlie before or after you slept with him?” Amara continued.

“Mum, I swear if you say, ‘slept with him’ one more time I’ll disown you.”

“Avoiding the question. So that means you did sleep with…” She grinned. “Sorry, spent the night with Maddox.”

“It’s not funny.” Tears prickled. She dropped the piping bag on the work surface.
