Griffin called Duke to come get the few prints he pulled from Eveâs windowsill in her bedroom. After packing up his equipment, he joined her in the living room.
âSo? Any messages on the machine?â
She shook her head, her forehead creased.
âWell, Iâd say thatâs a good thing. He knows to follow the order.â
She pierced him with a severe look. âHeâs not an idiot. Leaving a message would prove heâd violated it. And my brother is no idiot.â
The asshole was in Griffinâs eyes, but he didnât think starting an argument about that would be wise.
âDuke should be here soon to take the prints I found.â
âYou wonât find his.â She turned away, walking toward the kitchen.
âMaybe not, but if you think someone was in here, then Iâm going to investigate it. Itâs my job.â And I care about you too much not to do anything. Though he kept that to himself.
He was treading in deep waters with her. The slightest wrong move and heâd drown. He knew it without even thinking about it. Every moment that went by, he knew she teetered on the edge of running, even with him trying to reassure her heâd keep her safe.
A whisper of a smile appeared before flickering away as she grabbed a glass from the cupboard. âI know. If it makes you feel better to do it, then I want you to.â
Why the hell didnât it make her feel better as well? What was she afraid heâd find?
She poured herself a glass of water, sipping it.
The tension in the house grew as they stared at each other. He had no idea how itâd gotten as thick as it had when theyâd been fine before coming over here.
âTomorrow, besides the phone, weâll call an alarm company to come out and install it in here.â
âIâd have to call Mindy first.â
He grinned. âItâll be fine. I promise.â
The glass made a sharp sound as it hit the counter. âMaybe so, but Iâd feel better calling Mindy before installing something. The owner might not appreciate me doing something without permission.â
âHe wonât have an issue with it. Itâs something that shouldâve been done a long time ago.â
She frowned. âWho owns this house?â
The sheepish grin he delivered told her without voicing anything.
She shook her head, laughing. âWhy didnât you tell me you owned this place? All that stuff in the shed is yours. You never had the intention of bringing any of it to the donation center.â
Well, eventually, he wouldâve. It hadnât been a pressing matter.
âI didnât think it was a big deal that I rented this place out. And why should any of thisââhe asked waving his hand at the furniture she had taken from the shedâ âsit and collect dust when itâs now getting used?â
âIâm not a charity case. I donât want to be treated like one.â
He inhaled, then exhaled, trying to find the right words. âWhy are we fighting?â
She blinked as if surprised by the question.
âBecause I feel like weâre fighting about silly things.â He took a few steps toward her but stopped before getting into her space.
