I sat in the sparse room staring at the bowl of food they expected me to eat. It looked inedible, but I think it was supposed to be porridge. Lukewarm porridge. At some point I’d likely get hungry enough to eat cockroaches if they kept dishing up this shit, but I had enough strength in me to refuse it for now. Hopefully they’d learn and bring me actual food. It didn’t help that staring at the bowl of slop made me think of pancakes, bacon, bagels and cream cheese. All the delicious things I had enjoyed at Darkwells.

The only furniture in the room was the chair I sat on and the table with my porridge. The walls were a limestone whitewash, but the cheer of brightness fell far short of its aim. There was a window with metal bars dissecting the view into little boxes. It wasn't snowing, but a light dusting settled on the ground. Beyond the barred window and metal fencing was the wilderness. Freedom. A light shower of white coated the trees and fields, making everything look stark and lonely.

The yearning for freedom bored a deep pit inside of me. I would fall into that pit and wallow in misery if not for my burning hatred for McManus. And my determination to make him pay for what he was doing to Harry and me. For what he would force me to become.

They’d separated us once they led us out of the room. Directing me back to the room I’d woken in and gave me a blanket, plus wore sneakers and an ill-fitting jumpsuit that reminded me of prison clothes—because that’s what I was. The blanket barely kept me warm all night, and the clothes smelt of diesel.

I’d stayed awake for most of the night, or so it seemed, waiting and hoping they’d return Harry. But it seems McManus had already worked out I’d do anything to protect Harry and him likewise for me.

They’d spared Harry the whirring pain because McManus already knew where he’d find a shifter’s ability. And I’d hate to think about how many shifters he’d subjected to the treatment to gain that knowledge.

My stomach grumbled. I stared at the food, leaned forward, and gave it a sniff. It didn’t even have a smell.

How long had we been here? What were my friends doing?

I picked up the spoon to amuse myself by swirling it around in the porridge when the door opened. I continued to stare at the gray slop as I let the spoon drop back with a chink against the bowl.

“You’ll be wishing you ate your breakfast soon enough.” It was the woman who’d given us the blankets yesterday.

“Give me food and I’ll eat it.”

“That’s what’s on the menu, princess. You better get used to it.”

“I wouldn’t give it to animals.”

“But we’re giving it to you. Don’t try our patience. There’s little of that to spare for people like you.”

There would be no sympathy from her, so no point looking for it. “Where’s Harry?”

“That’s none of your concern.
