On the north side of the small lake a lone and age-battered cottonwood tree sings to itself. Early in the fall its leaves are smooth and yellow. When the wind blows through them they sing mostly of summer, with only a note or two of a rare cold night. When the leaves begin to fall the song changes every day. As more leaves fall the tone becomes uncertain, as though the composer is worried about something. But it only adds depth, and does not depress the birds. Often they join in with a simple piece of their own.
