Chapter Ten

Imminent Destruction

The prince had been quiet all day. He had dropped her at the back entrance of the palace to deliver her packages and simply left her there. She spent most of her time wondering what he was doing. By the time she finished delivering all of the packages, he was waiting outside for her as if he had never left. He refused to tell her where he had been or what he had been doing. And now she was supposed to continue to let him into her life.

She ground her teeth and continued up the narrow stairwell. She could feel him behind her, even if she could not hear him. At the top of the stairs she turned to face him. The curious look on his face faded the moment he felt her eyes on him.

“We are checking on Brendon’s wife,” she stated.

“Why?” Lonan asked with a raised eyebrow.

It rubbed her the wrong way. “Because some people care about others.”

She turned away before he could reply. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she pasted a smile on her face and knocked on the door of Brendon and Carolyn’s apartment.

Carolyn opened the door before she could finish knocking. Her eyes immediately went to the silent man at Rissa’s side.

“Lonan, right?”

Rissa sighed. “Yes. This is Lonan. Can we come in?”

Carolyn continued to scrutinize Lonan, even as she let them into the apartment.

“I take it Brendon came home last night,” Rissa muttered.

She sat at the kitchen table and barely remembered not to slump in her chair. Her eyes moved back toward the door to see Carolyn and Lonan still studying each other. She sighed.

“Would you like to sit down, Lonan?”

His gaze snapped to her, before returning to her surrogate mother. “Yes, thank you.”

It was the most polite she had ever heard him. Rissa hoped her mouth was not hanging open. She simply nodded and rose to walk to the coffee pot on the counter. She poured herself a generous serving, as she felt Lonan pass behind her to sit at the table. She turned with her coffee and frowned.

Lonan sat at the table, but Carolyn was still by the door. The older woman raised her eyebrows at her, clearly expecting an explanation. Rissa set the mug in her place at the table and walked over to her.

“Who is that? Brendon said he was living with you?”

“He’s a friend.”

“He looks like a nice boy, very handsome, but how well do you know him? I know you don’t have a lot of experience with this sort of thing—”

“—Carolyn!” Rissa hissed, darting her gaze to the silent prince. “Can we talk about this later?”

“Yes, of course. It’s just… Well, we never had that kind of discussion. You were always so busy with the rebellion—”

“Carolyn! Mom. Seriously. Later, okay?”

Rissa noticed the prince’s head cocked in their direction, obviously listening to the conversation. She gave Carolyn a tight smile and walked back to the table. As she sat, Lonan’s gaze was fastened on her with interest.
