Lead the Conversation with Positive Questions.
As you ask questions and listen, you are like a gentle detective. You are discovering what personality style the person has, and you are discovering what is most important to him or her.
You can ask questions like:
* What’s been going well for you?
* What are you looking forward to?
* What friendly comment has someone said to you?
* Tell me about something that went well and made you feel good …
When the person responds, you get clues like:
* My project at work went well. The team really understood the critical point when they saw my graph. (This person is likely a Beaver—an analyzer.) * I’m looking forward to our extended family gatherings. It’s great fun to hear what people have been up to. (This is likely a Dog—a supporter.) * My supervisor said that I found the key to impressing our new client. (This is likely a Peacock—a promoter.)
* My team has been using the effective XYZ process. This has increased our bottom-line by … (This is likely a Lion—a leader.)
Remember to express sincere appreciation for a new person’s positive natural tendencies, which are visible as his or her personality style. This helps us make a great connection. Also, we learn to reduce the expression of our annoying habits (annoying to the new person’s personality style). When we do this, we give the blossoming friendship a chance!
