Chapter 6

“Combat is important for all supernatural creatures,” Professor Xu announces. We students are gathered in the inner training chamber on the first floor of the castle. “Whether it comes from the far-flung caves where lone shifters practice the style of Lunar Fist or wizards who choose to fight with swords, fighting is an asset that is indispensable to all non-mankind.”

Someone coughs in the back of the room. “And women.” The comment earns a string of giggles from mostly women in the room. Professor Xu smirks and lifts his hands defensively.

“You’ll have to forgive me,” he drawls with an impish look that looks far from apologetic. “When I was a boy—some odd three hundred years ago—women rarely practiced fighting arts. Now, I often see them best the boys.”

Another young woman lets out a wolf-like howl. The classroom descends into dark laughter. These students may be rich kids, but at least they have a sense of humor.

I try to chuckle along, but my ribs ache too much from last night’s fall to the ground. At the last moment, I managed to catch myself with a buffering spell as I fell, but the damage was done. Gravity is merciless even for the supernatural. My body is sore all over from Atlas’s powerful blast of vampire magic. I suspect, but cannot prove, that Collin might have whispered his own buffering spell to help my fall. I tasted someone else’s magic on my numb lips last night. I have no broken bones, but it’s like I got hit by a truck full of hypermasculine vampire energy with daddy issues. Collin and Atlas never came down to make sure I was alive. This morning, I saw the face of the clock tower was utterly pristine again.

Was it too low to bring up Atlas’s parentage?

In my defense, Atlas is a dick. He thinks he can rule the school because he’s hot and powerful. Hell, all of them think that! Every single one of The Four seem like dicks, except for Alek. I have yet to interact with him but judging from the others…

“Make sure to stretch before we pair off,” Professor Xu calls out. I half-heartedly stretch, trying to avoid my poor ribs. Why did Fighting Magical Arts have to come first thing in the morning after I got punted off a tower like a human football?

I study Professor Xu. According to his blurb in the informational booklet about the Academy, he’s a lion shifter who hails from rural China. He’s the most talented practitioner of Light Arts, the opposite style of my fighting choice. My stomach clenches nervously. Artemis trains all OA agents in the style of Dark Arts. Both styles are similar, but Dark Arts fell out of vogue about three centuries ago. My style is considered primitive and… well, just a tad evil if we’re being honest. Dark Arts is more popular among demons and vampires. Witches and wizards rarely dabble in it, but my magic favors Shadow Arts. I need a vessel to pool energy into for my witchcraft and Dark Arts works well with sharp, small blades.
