Chapter Thirteen

Sylvia took Lexie back to her house since it was the closest place she could think of. She didn’t want to risk taking her to her grandparents’ house. Her grandmother might be considered a powerful Curandera, but that didn’t mean Sylvia wanted to involve them with whoever or whatever was after Lexie. She knew her house was protected, she’d always made sure of it. For now, Lexie would be safe with her.

“Pull off your shirt, let me see how bad it is,” she said the moment they entered the kitchen. She led Lexie to the sink and grabbed a towel, doing a cursory exam of the wound. Although she’d been gripped by a cold fear since leaving Lexie’s apartment, she was angry now. Angry that someone was after Lexie and using the spirit world to go after her. Angry at Lexie for keeping this possibility from them. And angry at herself for not seeing it and being better prepared.

Lexie slowly unbuttoned her work shirt. It had soaked up the flow of blood from the laceration caused by the falling cross, the wet material sticking to her like a second skin. She pulled it off, hissing out a breath. With slow movements she removed the thin T-shirt she wore underneath. The fabric stuck to the blood and open skin of the three-inch gash on the back of her shoulder. As she pulled the shirt off, blood seeped out from the wound and dribbled down her back.

“This looks bad,” Sylvia said. “Here, see if you can hold this on it. I’ve got a first-aid kit in the bathroom.” She handed Lexie the towel and moved toward the living room. Before she could cross the entry Ray rushed through the front room and grabbed her by the shoulders.

“Sylvia! Are you all right?” His eyes swept over her looking for signs of an injury. Relief swept over him, easing the tightness in his chest when he saw she was still intact.

He’d been in town most of the afternoon trying to work up the nerve to find Lexie so they could talk. After several hours of sitting in the diner drinking coffee, he decided to give up and head home. He’d just climbed into his truck when Sylvia called. She didn’t say much except that there had been trouble and she needed his help. His imagination had raced with different scenarios as he rushed to her house, the near-attack by the stray dogs three nights earlier at the front of his mind.

Sylvia wrestled out of his grip and glared at him. “Yes, I’m fine. It was Lexie — ”

Ray spun around to look at Lexie before Sylvia could finish her sentence. He was at her side in two steps.

“Lexie, what happened?” He reached out to touch her shoulder, jerking his hand back when she grabbed her ruined shirt to cover herself.

“This is hardly the time to be embarrassed,” Sylvia snapped. “Why don’t you clean it for her? I’m going to get the first aid kit.
