Chapter Eleven

The bell over the door to The Veil jingled as Rory stepped inside.

“Tyler?” she called, scanning the shelves as she walked towards the counter. If anyone had books with information about demons it was her.

“Hey Rory!” Tyler greeted her as she entered the shop from the back apartment. “I wasn’t expecting to see you again so soon.”

“Is that a bad thing?” Rory asked.

“Not at all. I’m glad you came back. But I’m sensing this isn’t a social call. What can I help you with?” Tyler asked, thumbs hooked into the belt loops of her jeans.

“I am glad to see you,” Rory protested, “But you’re right. I’m looking for something. But it’s kind of a long story though, do you remember when we spoke yesterday, and you told me I could come to you if I needed to talk?”

“Of course. Do you want to sit down?” Tyler asked, gesturing to the Tarot table.

Rory nodded stepping over to the table and taking a seat. Tyler sat down across from her and began absently shuffling the cards on the table, waiting for Rory to begin talking.

“There’s something about me, that only a handful of people know,” Rory began, sighing. “I try to keep it under wraps most of the time.”

“You’re a medium,” Tyler said, her cerulean eyes filled with interest as silence fell between them.

“How did you know that?” Rory asked Tyler, taken aback by the blunt statement.

“I sensed it yesterday. Some of the spirits here in Dark Hollow Lake… they follow you. Drawn to you like a beacon. I saw them outside the shop window yesterday, and they are outside the window today.”

Rory whipped around, searching for the specters. She couldn’t see anything. As she turned back to face Tyler, she shivered. She felt their eyes on her.

“You can see ghosts too?” Rory whispered.

“And interact with them. But these spirits that follow you, are attached to you in some way. They have made themselves invisible to put your mind more at ease. I can see them because they also want something from me.”

“What do they want?” Rory wondered aloud. “And why do they stay outside?”

“Salt. There is a salt barrier in front of the door. A girl has to have her peace and quiet.” Tyler said smiling.

“Salt?” Rory said, mystified.

“Yes. Salt creates a safe space that spirits can’t cross. Didn’t you do any research when you figured out you were a medium?” Tyler asked, puzzled.

“Uh... not exactly. I wanted to run as far away as possible from them. I didn’t bother trying to understand or use my ability,” Rory said, rubbing the back of her neck where goosebumps had erupted.

“I think they want me to tell you, that they don’t want to hurt you. They need your help.” Tyler said, staring out the shop window. “But I sensed yesterday that you were afraid of them. Your mind is closed to them, and so when they do appear to you, you see terrifying apparition, instead of seeing them as they truly are.”

“Easier said than done,” Rory said, shaking her head.
