We stopped for coffee. It was an apology, and a stall for time. I made it for her again just as she liked it, and then bought her a sandwich to go with it, adding a chocolate bar at the checkout counter.

Back at home, I took a quick shower while she ate, and then joined her on the sofa that seemed to double as a confessional. She was sipping at her coffee when I asked her again to tell me of what she had seen in her short life to make her wish for one such as me.

She took another drink of coffee, and sat back, still holding the cup between both hands warming herself, perhaps stalling in her own way. She pulled her legs up on the sofa, and placed her naked feet in my lap, wanting contact with me, but also to keep me at a distance. She cleared her throat, and looked at me with an expression that caused the thing in my chest to twist and roll over dangerously.

Not knowing why, I pulled the blanket from the back of the sofa, and covered her legs and feet, keeping my hands on her underneath the soft material.

“I told you that when I was small I went to live with my Granny and my mother’s brother.” I nodded, rubbing her foot gently to encourage her words. “His name was Eddie. He had moved in with Granny when her husband passed away to help her pay the bills. I was six when I went to stay there, too, and at first everything was fine. But he liked to drink, and when he was drinking he liked to touch.” She took another sip of coffee and picked at the lid nervously, chewing her lip as the thoughts took her mind away.

“At first it was tickles. I mean, every kid likes tickles, right?” She chuckled without humor, still focused on her cup. “I didn’t like tickles. Not his anyway. They made me feel wrong. The way he lingered too long in some places with his hard grubby fingers, and refused to let me go no matter how much I begged him to. “Then,” she swallowed hard, stolen away from me by the dark alleys of her memory that this Eddie still lived in, “he started ‘accidentally’ walking in on me when I was bathing. At first, he would pretend it was a mistake and leave after he got an eyeful, but then he started staying a little longer, staring at me longer.” She ran her hand through her hair her face twisted as she felt those stained emotions again.

I wanted to beg her stop, but I knew she needed to tell me these things. It was the bearing of her scars that paid the price of her ticket to ride immortality by my side. Soon, I would offer her the same of myself, to make sure she understood what she was asking of me. There was no way back from these revelations, and only endurance and understanding could take us through to the other side.
