Eric's face was stuck in a smile as he read Darlene's romance. He could understand the allure now. No one died, the bad guy was not scary, and there was plenty of humor mixed in with the steam. It was pure enjoyment.

"Can I come in?" Max asked from the doorway.

"Sure." Eric put the book down open on his chest and raised the back of the hospital bed with the remote.

"What are you reading?" Max eyed the cover. "That's not the book I was reading to you."

"You were reading to me?"

"Bridget said that it was good for you. Some people are aware of their environment when they are in a coma, and keeping them engaged helps bring them back." He lifted the chair, brought it closer to the bed, and sat down.

"Thanks for reading to me, but I had no idea that you did that. Darlene didn't tell me."

"You're welcome. Where is she?"

"She went to the café to get us lunch." Eric glanced at the door and then at the camera mounted near the ceiling.

Could Bridget hear what was being said in the room?

Darlene had said that the doctor had gone to her office next door, so only Hildegard was left to look over him, and she was chill. He would have preferred if she didn't hear the conversation he was about to have with Max, but if she did, it wasn't a big deal.

If Max agreed to his proposition to help activate Darlene's dormant genes, they wouldn't be able to keep it a secret anyway. Everyone knew that Eric's fangs and venom glands were not active yet, so he could not activate his mate.

"I need to talk to you," he said quietly. "And I'd appreciate it if you keep what I'm about to ask you confidential."

"Of course." Max put a hand on his chest. "No one will get it out of me. Not even with torture."

Eric smiled. "Dramatic much? If you are ever tortured to reveal my secret, you have my permission to spill the beans."

"Noted."

Eric scooted aside and patted the spot next to him on the bed. "Come closer. I don't want anyone to overhear me."

"There is no one out there." Max pushed to his feet and sat on the bed. "Bridget is gone, and Hildegard told me that she'd be in the back, filling up the supply cabinet, but if you needed her, you could press the button, and she'd come running."

"That's good to know." Eric took a deep breath. "So, you know that my venom glands and fangs won't come online until six months from now."

Max nodded.

"And it might take even longer than that because they didn't start growing yet. Bridget saw some swelling in the area where the glands are supposed to grow, but I can't feel anything, and since my transition started two weeks ago, they should have been well on their way by now."

"They'll come. Everyone experiences transition differently."

"Yeah, you're probably right. The problem is that Darlene doesn't have six or eight months."

"I know. But what can be done about it? She's your truelove mate.
