Fig. 10.1. SS General Hans Kammler

From January 31, 1945, Kammler became head of all missile operations at Peenemünde, Germany. This meant that Wernher von Braun, the German pioneer in rocket technology, now answered to Kammler. Kammler thus became partially responsible for the V-2 bombardments of London. The Allied armies were now in France and advancing rapidly toward Berlin. But Hitler ordered that the V-2 facility remain in place until the moment the war front reached Germany’s borders. Kammler was promoted by Himmler to the top rank of the SS, and he was now the fourth most important person in the Third Reich. But he was now stretched very thin since he also remained responsible for the entire secret antigravity weapons program at the Skoda Works. Hitler had realized that his only hope for winning the war was to defend against Allied bombing by getting the Haunebu militarily effective, which was why he depended on Kammler. But time had run out, and he was now planning his own survival.
