Leah

The human quarters are simple but adequate. If I’m being honest, it’s not the worst place I’ve ever been. Still, that doesn’t seem to be enough to take the sting out of being forgotten here by Cossar.

I lie on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. Maybe I just need to lower my expectations. I’ve always just been a lowly human slave, after all. To escape Rhakis and get away to freedom is monumental for me, so why do I even look for more?

The idea that I was going to be taken care of, by either Illare or Cossar, is ridiculous. The fantastic ramblings of an absurd little girl. I guess it’s time for me to grow up and figure out where to go from here, on my own.

I don’t have an immediate answer for that question, however. I end up settling for counting the narrow wooden planks that make up the ceiling. I’m at 11 when there’s a knock on the door.

I stand up, answering the door nervously. Are they about to send me back to Pyrthos? I’m sure that it’s coming, sooner or later, but I hoped I’d have a bit more time.

A servant waits politely at the door. His face looks impassive and indifferent, but he’s not rude or scornful to me. This is a welcome relief. Often, humans get the worst treatment from the lower classes, since we’re one of the only groups they can take their resentment out on.

“Master Cossar has summoned you to his quarters. I am here to escort you presently.”

“Oh,” I remark in surprise. “Y-yes, of course.”

I follow timidly behind the servant. It takes us a long time to reach our destination, as the human quarters are in a rather remote spot at the back of the estate. We must pass the servants’ quarters and kitchen to even reach the stairs that eventually lead us up to the nobles’ chambers.

I barely take anything in as we walk through the house. I’m too excited to think that perhaps, Cossar didn’t forget about me after all. Maybe he really did just need time to settle in with his family. I can understand that, of course.

When we finally arrive, the servant knocks on his door. Cossar opens, looking past him to meet my eye. There’s a wild, giddy look on his face that he’s barely concealing, but I can see it in his gaze.

“Master Cossar, the human Leah as requested.”

“Thank you. You may leave us,” Cossar instructs, trying to sound formal.

As he shuffles out of the doorway, I can finally get a glimpse into Cossar’s quarters. Even just the little peek that I have overwhelms me and my jaw drops open. Cossar doesn’t give me much time to process it, however. He reaches out to snatch my arm, pulling me inside with a wide grin that he can’t contain.

He shuts the door behind us, and I look around the space in wonder. We’re in a sitting room of sorts, with a big fire roaring in the fireplace to our left.
