Hot arousal flowed through him as Bianca responded, and he pulled her even closer. He could hear her racing heart, and she moaned into his mouth.

They parted only when the captain announced they were returning to shore, and disappointment crawled through him. He didn't want their time together to end, to return to the reality of their mission.

"Have you been to Pierre's?" he asked suddenly. "It's a Creole restaurant just north of the French Quarter."

Bianca looked at him, surprised. "No."

"I suggest we try it," he said, hoping that he didn't sound too eager—or nervous. Usually when he asked a woman out, he had no doubt they would agree. But with Bianca, he was afraid she'd insist on going back, and ask him to never kiss her again.

"I'd like that," Bianca said. Relief and pleasure swirled through him, and he grinned. He felt like a giddy teenage boy who'd asked out the hottest girl to the prom, and she'd agreed.

As they stepped off the boat, he sent a quick text to Elisabetta letting her know they'd be a little late returning. Her text back was one of wry amusement, and he knew her teasing would be endless when they returned. No matter. It was worth it to spend more time with Bianca.

They went to Pierre's, which Elias pointed out had been a boarding house the last time he'd lived here, and as they dined on their meals of jambalaya, Bianca confessed that her favorite place to eat in the city was a hole in the wall diner nearby that served greasy po’ boy sandwiches.

After they ate, she took him there, and he only grinned as she teased him about his appetite when he ordered several po’ boys in a row.

They spent the rest of their day walking around the Garden District, where Elias pointed out the homes of vampires and witches. He told her that in his day, most of the witches he knew had homes outside of the city; practicing magic was easier out in the surrounding bayous. He held her close as they walked, and again, it struck him how natural it felt to have her in his arms.

But as it grew dark, Elias knew he couldn't keep her out any longer. It was too risky. From what he knew of the Blood Order, they prowled the streets at night.

When they returned to the penthouse, Bianca grabbed his hand before they could step inside.

"Thank you," she whispered. "For today. I haven't had a day like this one since Gabriella was alive."

"Good," he said, smiling.

He glanced at the door before pulling her close.

"One more . . .” he murmured.

Bianca understood, and she leaned in to meet his lips as they shared another kiss. Elias reluctantly ended it, stepping away from her to enter the penthouse.

"Have fun?" Elisabetta asked in a sly tone, as soon as they stepped inside. Elias gave her an annoyed look while Bianca flushed.

"Yes. Any updates?" Elias asked.

"There was another report of two missing humans," Jake said, looking troubled.
