CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Something about the beginning of a battle always made Ruarc feel calm. All nervousness and anxiousness evaporated. Leaving him composed and relaxed.

Movement on his other side caught his attention. Ruarc looked to find five soldiers. He swiveled his head and found that four Reapers had joined Rordan. Tension crackled through the air as the two groups stared at each other. Ruarc knew more Reapers were around, just as he knew there were more soldiers. He stood between the two units, each glaring at the other.

“What the fek?” Rordan demanded of Ruarc in a fake tone of irritation.

Ruarc owed Rordan, the Reapers, and Death a great deal when all this was over. In response, Ruarc shook his head. “I don’t know.”

Their little show had better work to save his family. He was counting on it doing just that.

“What are you wankers waiting for?” one of the Reapers asked the soldiers.

The soldier nearest Ruarc asked, “The other five of you can show yourselves now. It’ll make things easier for you.”

Ruarc jerked as if punched. Where had the soldier gotten that number? He turned his head to Rordan in time to see a small frown cross the Reaper’s features.

“You think there’s only ten of us?” Balladyn asked with a grin.

Rordan’s gaze met his, and he saw the sorrow in his friend’s eyes. Ruarc’s stomach roiled as comprehension dawned. He had told Chevonne there were ten Reapers. He knew there were at least that many. The only way the Others could know the number ten was from Chevonne. Which meant…she had betrayed him.

And the Reapers knew.

Rage against the Others consumed him as Ruarc turned to the soldiers and called his sword to him, just as an orb of magic formed in his left hand. Rordan moved to his right as Balladyn came up on his left.

Ruarc didn’t know who threw the first strike. One moment, they were standing and glaring at each other. And the next, orbs were flying. Ruarc used his sword to slice the balls of magic coming too close to him. He spun, dodged, dove, and slid out of the way, all the while throwing his own orbs.

The soldiers moved blindingly fast, as did the Reapers. Ruarc began to think he might get out of this alive until a ball landed on his right shoulder. He gritted his teeth as searing agony took him, but he somehow managed to move out of the way as another orb came at him.

Suddenly, a soldier was in front of him. Ruarc tossed his sword to his left hand and used the blade to block the fighter’s downward strike. The Fae screamed as Ruarc’s sword severed his arm. Ruarc used the opportunity to shove an orb of magic into the soldier’s face with his right hand.

The pain of using his injured arm was immense, but Ruarc couldn’t give in to it. If he did, he would be dead. So, he clenched his teeth and concentrated on continuing to dodge the never-ending balls of magic. Ruarc managed to hold his own.
