MY MISSION WAS TO AVOID Dr. McCarthy like the plague. Unfortunately, our schedules overlapped today and this was unavoidable. However, due to some divine intervention, for the next two weeks we were to work separate shifts. He was not an ER doctor, he was a cardiac surgeon and I saw less of him due to his busy schedule in surgery. I thought Providence was smiling down at me by keeping him busy.

On a few occasions, I was indeed unfortunate to witness the foreplay between himself and his girlfriend when she visited him. They did nothing lewd, there was no lip kissing or anything of the sort. It was just the way they interacted with each other that made me realize just how much he cared for her. I knew his affection for her ran deep, by the way he looked at her with adoring eyes, the way he pushed her blond hair back from her face and how he would laugh at her jokes.

It was obviously a well-established relationship from their interaction with each other. There was a level of comfort that came only from people who had known each other for years. And the way she would always lean on his shoulder when sitting or walking always got to me. I didn’t know why it bothered me so much, although I tried to ignore it. More than that, I really hated that it bother me at all.
