Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t seem to come up with the perfect idea straight away. As I mentioned earlier, the idea for The Collective brewed for years, even if I didn’t recognise it at the time.
When it comes to ideas, you also need to give yourself permission to dream big. Really big. Get your idea and make it as big as you possibly can in your mind, not worrying about the money.
That’s one of the secrets to really taking the lid off the pot: you need to absolutely remove the ‘lack of money’ barrier from your head if you want to truly create a game-changing, market-disrupting idea. Instead, you must completely go into the mindset of, “If I had all the money in the world, how would I do it?” That way, you can get really clear on where you want to go – and once you get excited about that, more often than not, the money has a way of coming.
Always go to the big, visionary, dreamy picture first, and then work back to figure out how you are going to make it happen. By approaching it this way, it removes all barriers and eliminates concerns about the infrastructure you’ll need. That’s where you should be taking it and that’s where you need to let your mind wander.
When I decided to launch a magazine, I wanted it to be BIG from the start. I wasn’t interested in playing a small game (at all) and so if I was going to do this thing, I was going to do it well. We had dabbled in offshore distribution with books, but had never achieved it with any great success, despite a few decent attempts – including one push in New York City where we secured 31 meetings in five days – but I just didn’t have what it took at the time to pull it off. We didn’t have the grunt behind us to get the momentum we needed.
With the magazine, I wanted to dig deep and tap into this grunt from the get-go. I was so hungry for change that I didn’t have anything to lose. As a result, I let my mind run wild and this situation only proved that when you let yourself really shoot for the stars, you can actually reach some of them.
I signed the lease on a new office that could house more than eight times the amount of staff I had at the time. If I was going to do this, I was damn well going to jump in boots and all, and make as big and as positive an impact as I possibly could. I wasn’t good at doing anything half-heartedly.
Did I realise just how big it would go? Probably not even close, but the intention was there and it was set into me like concrete. I kept saying to my mum, “It’s going to be big.” Poor mum; I think I nearly drove her nuts. When the physical magazine landed
