Chapter Five

Not long after they’d taken a break and had breakfast, they all gathered in the lounge room drinking coffee. Graham and Damon were preparing for their meeting with AJ and his work partner, Officer William Holden. It seemed kind of funny to Graham that AJ had almost become a part of the family since Damon had disappeared into thin air, and then made his horrifying reappearance. In his off duty hours AJ had come to the hospital and sat with Graham and Damon. At first Graham had thought maybe the man had a bit of a crush on either Damon or himself, but that was quickly squashed as a possibility, and even if it was a possibility it would never amount to anything because Graham wasn’t interested, and he knew damn well he’d fight for Damon’s heart before he watched him walk into the arms of another man.

In the end he realised AJ only wanted to be friends. Graham had never really had friends before, so this was a first for him, and he kind of liked it. For years now he’d only ever had hangers-on who only stayed because while drunk he was known to be free and easy with his money.

Of course, all that had changed now.

Across the room, Damon was sitting on the end of one large couch and was talking quietly, yet determinedly into the phone.

It would seem that getting kidnapped and tortured for three days was not enough of a deterrent to keep the man from his job. In reality Graham knew Damon was trying to keep his mind off of everything he’d gone through. Though the frown lines on his face were worrisome, so when Damon looked his way Graham found himself smiling in what he hoped was a reassuring manner. For a second Damon’s frown deepened and then melted away as he slowly returned the gesture.

When he got off the phone, Damon crooked his finger telling Graham to come near. Graham didn’t have to be told twice. He picked up his coffee and moved to sit beside Damon.

“That was Hunter. I think I’ve finally convinced him there’s no need for him to postpone his and Clay’s honeymoon any longer. I honestly don’t know why they waited in the first place. It’s not like they can do anything here anyway. It’s best if we just leave it in the hands of the police.”

“Firstly, they waited because their friend had disappeared. Secondly, they stayed because the police asked them to. And thirdly, they wanted to be here for you. Whether you believe it or not you actually matter to us all,” Graham tried to explain. He didn’t understand why it was such a hard concept for Damon to grasp.

“But they had nothing to do with what happened to me,”

Damon blurted out.

“We know that now. But when the cops were first questioning everyone, Jayden recognised his ex, Bryan as the man I saw arguing with you at the wedding. At the time he was our best lead to finding you.
