Chapter 16

Max could admit it. He was pissed. He’d just been treated like a john, or a pimp maybe. But the fact was, he’d just slept with the nanny, and so, there it was. Was he that guy? Guess so. He definitely didn’t appreciate Red pointing it out, and definitely not in a way that made her seem somehow willing to be treated like shit. It didn’t even make any sense. She wasn’t some desperately craven woman who needed to seduce him in order to survive. She was Red!

They’d had a quiet dinner, eating on trays in front of the tv. He’d tried to make a few jokes, but he knew they were stupid and dull, and it had just been a relief when she’d leaned over and given him a kiss on the cheek to say goodnight.

“Goodnight, Max. I loved our afternoon delight, even if it was our only one. I don’t feel bad about it, and I hope you’re okay too. I’ll see you in the morning.” She’d gotten up and made it to the door before asking, “Does Harriet bring the kids back or should I go get them?”

Max swallowed and nodded. “Lucas or Harriet will bring them back. Usually, it’s around ten or so. I’ve got the first morning shift tomorrow, so I’ll already be gone. It’ll make it easier for the kids to just roll into your routine, I think. Feel free to bring them over for lunch, if that makes sense.”

Wendy nodded and turned to go. “G’night,” she said over her shoulder.

“G’night,” he returned, turning back to the tv. Damn. That was so weird and dispassionate and gross, he thought. This is why only creeps sleep with the nanny. Shit. I’m the creep.

“Ugh,” he groaned out loud. He needed to go for a run. His body was all clogged up with dumb teenaged emotions. He got up and went out the back door. He stripped by the door, standing naked at the edge of the yard. He checked that the windows were empty before he shimmered and shifted and went for a run as his Wolf. No need to add more complexity to the situation.

Just shifting allowed him to shake off some of the peskier emotions. His animal just didn’t tolerate embarrassment. The grossness of his last exchange with Red was gone, and just sorrow was left. He could feel the sadness that such great sex had been followed so quickly by disquiet. It should have been the beginning of something equally as fantastic, not ending so immediately with such unsettling feelings. His Wolf shut it down and ran faster, deeper into the woods. He found himself on the other side of the hill behind his house, on the border of the next town. The smells were different here, so he slowed down and began loping along the border, being sure to stay completely hidden. No one wanted wolves in their yard, no one.

He followed the border for a half an hour or so and began heading back.
