Chapter Eighteen: Learning the Situation

Drake Hale

The fire burned all around him as he felt himself propelled backwards through the air before he bounced along the ground as he landed. He felt his skin burning as his clothes burst into flames, and he struggled to suck hot air into his lungs. Nothing was right. Nothing was as it should be.

He wanted to scream from the pain; pain that he shouldn't be feeling. His dragon should have protected him, yet it didn't.

And then he saw Joey, crying for him. Willing him to be okay. And he tried to tell her how much he loved her. He wanted to explain the unexplainable, that somehow fate had drawn them together when they least expected it. He wanted to tell her that everything was going to be okay, but he didn't have any breath in his body to force the words out.

And then there was nothing.

Drake heard his name being called and finally managed to swim toward the sound. He recognized his mother's voice, and he finally figured out how to move his arms and open his eyes. He blinked hard against the sudden bright light as he focused on the concerned faces hovering over him.

Sarah sucked in a deep breath. "Finally. I was getting worried."

He glanced around to see that he was in his own bedroom. "What happened?"

Vinia sat down into a chair next to his bed, but she didn't let go of his hand. "You got your ass handed to her when a couple propane tanks exploded."

Snippets of the barn fire ran through his mind. "Is the fire out?"

Sarah nodded. "I got it out. I don't know why you couldn't, but it didn't restart when I put it out."

"I couldn't put it out." He struggled to remember. "I thought I had it out."

"You did," Colton answered as he walked into the bedroom. "But all of a sudden it just all flashed and was right back to burning again."

Vinia leaned over and kissed his forehead. "I'm going to let Joey know. She's been worried to death about you, but we finally managed to chase her out to go feed the horses. Of course that's the time you decide to wake up."

Drake struggled to sit up. His body was sore and stiff, but still functional. "Where is Joey?"

"Out in the pasture. I'll get her. You stay right there." Vinia disappeared out the door, and Colton sat down in the chair she had vacated.

Drake rubbed his face. "How in the hell did I manage to get hurt?"

"That's what we're trying to figure out," Colton responded. "Just like we're trying to figure out how the propane tanks got put in the barn, and why the fire torched the barn but didn't actually burn it the way a real fire should have."

More memories filtered through Drake's brain. "You're still thinking some kind of magic?"

Colton nodded. "And since Joey said that none of them use the tanks that were in the barn, it looks like arson is our best bet.
