Wrestlers get into trouble in big matches when they get “tight,” which means they start wrestling to protect a lead or to avoid losing. The Buddha would have called this getting caught in a contracted state. The best wrestling coaches do not teach their athletes to avoid getting tight; they teach their athletes to wrestle free. These coaches teach that winning a match is the mountain you are climbing; wrestling free is the intention with which you take each step. They teach their young people that to wrestle free in the most important matches of your life, you have to wrestle free in the least important moments in practice. You have to wrestle free in your schoolwork, your friendships, in the difficult moments and in the joyous ones. These coaches do not believe you will wrestle free unless you live free. To teach this, I have had to learn to live it.
Reflection
It is said that we are what we habitually do. The great coaches are teaching their athletes to wrestle free by living free. If you were your own coach, what would you be teaching?
