In a remote part of the Himalayas, in a muddy field, amid a herd of yak, I made a friend. Unfortunately, my yak-herder acquaintance and I lacked a common language, which limited how deeply we could connect. My Bhutanese only stretched as far as “Good morning!” and “Thank you.” My newfound friend’s English appeared to be comprised solely of “Hello,” which she’d yelled repeatedly, beckoning me to join her as I took photos in a field near her home. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

Carefully dodging yak patties, I half slid down a steep slope to my host’s home—a tent fashioned from straw, a plastic tarp, and weathered Bhutanese textiles. The woman’s easy smile and hearty laugh made me wish I could hang out and chew the yak fat with her all day, but our language barrier (and my travel schedule) meant it was soon time to go. After lots of pointing, shrugging, and smiling, we bid each other farewell with a warm hug and a wave. As I rejoined my tour group, I realized I didn’t even know my new friend’s name.

Language can be a bridge or a barrier—and I’ve always been a bridge-builder at heart. That’s one reason I became a writer. But there are days, like this one, when I wish I’d followed the other career path I’d considered, mastering a handful of languages to become a translator for the UN. Sadly, I may not be able to communicate with everyone I meet, but at least there’s no language barrier with God. Even when words fail me, God never fails to understand what I’m trying to say.
