DANGER

As Dagger flew toward the mountain he’d been sleeping under, he realized that he’d enjoyed himself immensely tonight. The constant rage and desire to scorch everything had been quiet. Well, until he thought of the male who’d attacked Brynna.

But other than that, he’d been at peace. Happy even, and when was the last time Dagger could say that?

Not since before the war started with the Ilyium over a thousand years ago.

The pain that first lanced his heart and soul when he walked away from Brynna grew steadily stronger the farther he got from her. It felt like a ripping—tearing—of his very being and made flying hard to do.

The pressure to turn back beat down on him like a heavy deluge of rain, only stronger. It pelted and slashed until Dagger finally turned, then glanced back and down. He spotted the faintest of light emanating from the windows of the tiny home.

He tried to turn away again, only to falter. He dove down, circled once, then twice before turning again in the direction he needed to go. The pain—despair—intensified, making it hard to draw in air or flap his wings.

Crap, this was not good. If he was feeling this, what might Brynna be experiencing?

Dagger continued to glide in ever-widening circles and was starting to make progress in putting some distance between the she-wolf and him, when a flash of light along the road heading toward Brynna's caught his attention.

A sense of foreboding filled Dagger at the sight—the road wasn’t well traveled. In fact, he’d not spotted any other vehicles since he’d started up it earlier in the evening, other than Brynna’s.

As he leveled out with the intent to check who might be headed Brynna’s way, the pain he’d been feeling released its claws. He flew fast and steady, drawing on the cloaking that would prevent anyone from being able to see him. He hadn’t bothered before—there was no one out this far north and at this time of night to see him—but now he wanted the element of surprise. It could be nothing, just another person on their way to a cabin for the night, but his intuition told him differently, and he’d long ago learned to trust his instincts.

As he drew close, Dagger realized that it wasn’t just one vehicle but three—all large and black with dark windows. Which made no difference to one with dragon eyesight. He just needed to get closer.

Dagger continued past the vehicles, then circled and glided alongside the road until he drew even with the last one. He glanced over but didn’t recognize the driver, although he did catch the signature of five supes inside, all smelled of wolves. He swept past that one and took a look at the second vehicle. It was the same with another five wolves. Pretty sure what he was going to find in the lead vehicle, Dagger pulled up alongside it, then had to fight the urge to let out a roar of rage along with a blast of fire.
