Chapter 13

The next morning, Letty arrived early at her office. She felt well-rested, probably because no Iraq dreams had tormented her in the night. She brought decent coffee with her in a thermos from home and sipped a cup as she watched early sunlight hit the ridges of the Santa Catalina Mountains. She went over everything that happened the evening before.

Dan. Her mind was filled with thoughts of Dan. Funny, sweet, handsome, and with the wildest story she’d ever heard. A Buddhist monk. Who knew? She told herself that she was going to have to show some self-discipline now. She couldn’t be thinking about that man all the time, no matter how interesting he seemed to her. Too much work to do. No, she had to stop thinking about Dan. Oh, but those deep blue-green eyes.

Letty forced herself to concentrate. She went back over her conversation with Gordon Miller. She kept coming up with the same conclusion. He did not appear to know anything about the business link with Scott Kimball. And what, if anything, did that have to do with his sudden and horrifying death? The car bombing wasn’t really her problem to solve, especially if it had nothing to do with Jen Kimball, her client. But what if it did indeed have something to do with the Kimballs?

Letty called Alejandro Ramirez at Tucson Police Department’s Homicide Unit. She and Alejandro had become friends on her last case. She knew she could be more open with him than anyone else at TPD.

“Hey, Letty, I’m glad you called,” Alejandro said when he answered his phone. “I was about to call you. You’re scheduled to give a statement to one of our officers about that car bombing yesterday. I told them I wanted to talk with you myself.”

“That’s good to hear. That’s exactly why I was calling. How about if I come to your office later this morning? I’ll fill you in on what I know.”

“It’s a deal. See you later.”

Frankie came in the front door just as Letty disconnected.

“Hi, Letty, are you okay? You went to see that dude who got bombed. I saw it on the news.”

“Yeah, I was about a half a block away when it went off. I got banged up a little but not seriously hurt. I saw Dr. Ennis, and he fixed me up.”

“Yeah, I met Doc Ennis at Will’s birthday party. He’s a nice guy. I’m really glad you’re okay.”

Letty nodded. “I did get a chance to talk to Gordon Miller. He didn’t know anything about his new business relationship with Scott Kimball. I believed him, too. He was surprised and seemed upset to learn that he had a new business partner. He said there were tax implications among other things. He was going to confront Kimball later, after his luncheon date with a client.”

“That makes sense. I guess I’d be upset, too, if I found out I was in business with someone, and I didn’t even know it.”

“So what’s this about Miller and Kimball owning a house together?”

“Yeah, that’s right.
