Chapter 10 – Kate

Kate slept in the spare room with the baby, in the end. She hadn’t been crying about anything in particular, and settled down pretty quickly when Kate came in to see her, a bright smile on her cheeky little face quickly giving way to a huge yawn. Kate sat by her makeshift cot for a little while, gazing down at her to make sure that the light sleep she’d drifted off into was making the transition into a proper, deep sleep… then she heaved a sigh, glancing back over to the door. She fiercely wanted to go back to the couch, to curl up in Milo’s arms and spend the rest of the night sleeping… or something else, she thought, a spark of desire going off deep in her belly.

But what if Rose needed her? She ought to stay in here for tonight—just in case the baby cried, she told herself firmly as she tucked herself into the freshly made bed. It had nothing to do with the fear that had risen in her like a snake that Milo might react badly to her rejoining him on the couch—that he might frown and turn away. Wasn’t that what her mother always said about men? The vast majority only wanted one thing… and once they’d gotten it, they wouldn’t give you the time of day.

She’d forgotten a lot of her mother’s lessons over the last hour or so, she thought with a grimace. Not intentionally, of course, she just… hadn’t thought. She’d let her dragon take over, let her gut instincts ride roughshod over her more rational side—the more rational side that would have screamed at her that it was a terrible idea to sleep with Milo, her neighbor, her… well, technically her boss, right? He was her employer. She was his nanny. This was—this had been a terrible idea. Absolutely terrible.

She slept badly, haunted by hard-to-remember dreams that reflected a combination of anxiety and desire… because as much as Kate might have been regretting her decision to fall into Milo’s arms, her body only wanted more of what they’d discovered together, there on that narrow couch, wrapped in each other’s arms. She’d never had sex before, not with anyone—and she’d been a little shocked, if she was honest, by how quickly she’d taken to it. It was as though she’d been a woman possessed—something about the feeling of Milo’s lips against hers had opened floodgates that only one thing was able to close again. Wasn’t your first time meant to be difficult and awkward and painful? It had been none of those things. It had been wonderful.

God, like the crush she’d been nursing hadn’t been bad enough already.

In the morning, she spent about ten minutes hyping herself up to confront him before she stepped out of the room—but to her surprise, she discovered when she finally opened the door that he’d already left for work. There was something strange about that. Worse than strange—it actively worried her, made her gnaw at her lip as a cold certainty settled into her stomach that something was wrong.
