CHAPTER 19

I studied Abella’s face, her eyes in particular. There was concern behind the shock that radiated from them. Concern that I was willing to become a vampire—for her.

What she didn’t know was I’d wanted to become a vampire since I first came to live with Lane and Cian. And now that Abella had come into my life, I had even more reason to want to be turned.

I needed to be with her. Human or vampire.

She probably wanted kids someday. And if she wanted me as much as I wanted her, I could save my sperm before I’m turned. I knew it would make things different if I was a vampire. But I was falling for her. Hard. Whether she or I liked it or not. Whether we accepted it or not.

And there was no way to stop it.

I wasn’t sure if I was in love with her, yet, but my chest has had a sharp ache in it ever since she drove away and left me standing by the shed after she told me she wouldn’t continue to see me.

Because that curse could kill me.

We both knew it.

But the look in her eyes at this moment spoke volumes. If I told her how important she was to me and that I would do anything so that we could be together, she would run. Whether Vanessa could actually take us back to try to eradicate the curse or not. She’d insist we shouldn’t be together and I’d be miserable for the rest of my life.

I went to her and placed my palms on her shoulders, squaring her body with mine. I had to be honest. She’d hate me if I wasn’t.

I ran my knuckle gently down the side of her cheek.

“The truth is, I’ve wanted nothing more than to be a vampire since I came to live in this mansion. They’ve placated me each and every time I’ve brought the subject up, telling me maybe someday. Before you came into my life, I honestly had no reason to want to be a vampire other than the knowledge that I would be stronger and live forever. And I’d wanted to be on equal terms with them.” I gestured toward the vampires who were standing around us. But when I glanced around the room, only Cian, Lane, Vanessa, and Darius remained, and even they were headed toward the door. No doubt to give us our privacy.

“Stay,” I said to them before they got to the door. “I want you to hear this, too.” Without a word, they stopped and waited for me to continue.

I focused my attention back to Abella, this time taking her hands in mine. “But now that I have a better reason, I understand why they’ve always put me off. I know now that being strong and wanting to live forever isn’t a good enough reason to live each day needing to ingest human blood and wanting to kill for it, if necessary, until I become accustomed to the thirst and gain control over my impulses.
